A Castle of Bone

Book: By Penelope Farmer

"It couldn't happen--yet it did. A pigskin wallet, placed in the old wardrobe cupboard that Hugh had just acquired secondhand for his room, turned into a large white pig that fell out, terrified, the moment the cupboard was opened. Hugh, his sister Jean, and Penn and Anna, their next-door neighbors, all gave chase to it. Then they experimented--and it was true. Anything left in the cupboard was returned to some earlier stage of its existence. But there was no telling how far back the change would take things.

For Hugh, sleeping in the same room as the cupboard, the nights became a series of haunting dream-adventures all centering around a strange castle. These he kept to himself. And then, by accident when they were roughhousing, Penn fell backward into the cupboard--and came out as a very small boy. The children's panic mounted, finally becoming terror, as they strove to return Penn to his rightful self and at last went into the cupboard with him."

Book: by Pamela Freeman (July 6, 2003)

"The Centre of Magic" is the final in the three Floramunde books, beginning with "The Willow Tree's Daughter" which told of the love between King Max of Floramunde and Salixia, the dryad of the willow tree, their child Princess Betony and her romance with the gardener's boy Basil. In "Windrider" we learnt of the chance Betony was offered by the dragon Windrider to "put down roots" and become a dryad herself, and her friend's and family's efforts to bring her back into their world. Finally, in "The Centre of Magic" we are introduced to the wizard Colchis, who has been expelled from the Wizard's Guild in the next kingdom from Floramunde, and his search for power and revenge. Knowing that Floramunde is filled with Wild Magic rather than the less potent Human Magic, he crosses over in order to tap into its source and restrain it for himself. (Ar/aP)

Charmed

TV Series: Season 02; Episode #22: "Be Careful What You Witch For" (18-May-2000)

The girls don't truly make their wish to the Genie in the first place. They realize it is a trick and there can be consequences to their wishing. But the Genie, through tricks and 'genie license' illicit a wish from each anyway. Shannon is first. She is on a date with a dull guy named Dick (gives them a chance to make some double meaning Dick jokes in the script). Genie secretly takes over Dick's body during date and causes Shannon to 'open up' to him. She wishes she could experience love like the first time.

Genie grants wish. We see a look of surprise on her face and a little video effect to indicate magic at work. Don't think ANY morphing happened there and if it did it was so quick to be ineffective. It was a quick cut from that scene to Allysa and Genie. At this point I think she managed to escape the situation without wishing. Next scene shows Genie hiding as he overhears third witch (Piper?) wishing Dan could move on with his life. That gets Dan a ticket to 'AP Land' while she doesn't even know she made an official wish. We only see final product of AP. No cut or morph of AP. Dan appears later in episode at the girls' door and he is VERY old.

Back to Allysa who I don't think even utters 'I wish' but does tell of her desire for a meaningful 'power'. Her 'wish' is granted and Genie is now free.

She discovers she has been given power of flight.

Cut to scene of SUV pulling up a bit fast. Shannon steps out and now has bangs and braces and a new attitude (makeup, same actress). Her adult memory is gone and she thinks her sisters are old. She gets called 'little sister' a few times in the episode after this. Being a teen she doesn't have her powers so the witches' power of 3 is broken. She was able to have her vehicle because the valet gave her the keys and said it was hers. apparently, her lack of responsibility allowed her to take it without questioning him I gets.

The Genie had gotten the power of flight that he gave Allysa from a demon who came looking for his power back. The two witches were able to thwart him using a freeze and now Allysa's power of flight.

Teen aged Shannon is rebellious, likes clothes, and apparently bad boys. Dressed in a mini skirt and boos she slips out the window where she unintentionally meets demon we saw earlier. She isn't afraid of him and they go 'parking'. She plays role as mature 'acting' yet naive teen in this situation.

The other sisters discover she is gone but don't know where to find her.

Demon kisses her at first and then tries to kill her (choke). Shannon runs away.

Shannon has her cell phone and calls her sisters. They tell her where to hide and go there to find her.

That was the demon's plan to get them together all at once. When they arrive Shannon comes running and crying. Before anything can happen the demon comes out and grabs Shannon. Genie helps the demon. Demon then stabs Shannon with a knife. The girls do get away and take Shannon. But even though the girls get away from the demon, Shannon is dead and so cannot be healed.

Genie has now had an apparent't change of heart and wants to help. He thinks if he gives up his freedom and returns to bottle all wishes will be reversed. He does that. Dan returns to his youthful self (off camera). We see Shannon's teen aged body on the floor. It morphs into Shannon's adult body. Clothes change to what she wore before

(BTW...dunno why since clothing never was magically changed in first place...) Unfortunately, she is still dead... just in an older body.

Girls decide Genie can again be released from bottle and grant wishes... which will include bringing Shannon back to life. They don't know what else to do. Of course Demon returns for final battle making this all harder than thought. But of course Genie is managed to be released from bottle and wish is made. Shannon appears, alive and well. The power of 3 is used to banish demon. A couple of other wishes and guarantees from 'reformed' Genie and show is wrapped up.

Actually, all in all... not too bad. The idea worked within the concept of the show and played like a story you might see here. A little tidy maybe, but ' teen' Shannon was believable enough and the braces made a realistic and striking enough difference that maybe hair and makeup alone wouldn't have achieved.

And so it goes......

Choose Your Own Adventure #6

Book: "House of Danger" by R. A. Montgomery (09/01/1982)

Plot Summary: You are an amateur detective and psychic investigator. After receiving a mysterious phone call, you end up investigating a modern house built on the site of an old prison.

If this is the one I remember - inside the book, one of the dead-ends went something like this: You are confronted with a ghost/spirit/specter/entity that forces you to choose between becoming older and becoming younger. If you choose to become younger, you go too far and become a baby again, and you rapidly become bored with the experience. It loops back to where the ghost forces you to choose. If you choose to be older, you're too old - quite elderly, in a wheelchair, living is an effort - and your heart stops beating... And this is illustrated (Joy!) There's much more to the story, of course - this IS a CYOA book.

THE FIGHT AGAINST TYRANNY CONTINUES...

The new nation of Turtalia is caught in a death struggle with the evil Doradan state. Warfare has spread to San Francisco, where a determined band of guerillas is holding out in the hills watching the destruction of this once beautiful city.

You're at an altitude of two thousand feet, scanning the horizon with computer-enhanced binoculars. You're in constant contact with the forces on the ground led by Captain Ricardo and the ranger lieutenant who had spoken earlier at the meeting with Sellers, the guerrilla leader. Suddenly, clouds envelop your helicopter and the radio is knocked out. The clouds contain a choking, blinding gas. You and your pilot reach for the oxygen equipment, but the pilot slumps forward and stops breathing. A crimson circle appears on his uniform over his heart. He's dead!

If you decide to bail out, turn to page 80. If you decided to try and land the helicopter yourself, turn to page 16.

On page 111

"Haven and the humanoid fling you from the crystal spaceship. You hit the sandy ground with a grinding thud! The ship disappears. Moments later you're surrounded by your ranger force. Your memory has begun to fade. You remember nothing about Haven and the ship. But your memory loss doesn't stop there. Soon you don't even remember who you are, where you're from, or who the people surrounding you are. Within an hour you have lost the ability to speak. All sounds become unintelligible, except for a wailing cry---and that's coming from you! You now have the mind of a three-week old infant. Haven has taken his revenge.

The Chronicle

TV Series: Season 01; Episode #07: "Only the Young Die Good"

NYACK, N.Y. — Five hundred years ago, Ponce de Leon searched for a fountain of youth in what is today known as Florida. Little would he have suspected that such a place would be found a half-millennium later in Westchester County, New York.

That's where, until last week, Doctor Suzanne Gorham ran the Gorham Longevity Institute, a high-rent retirement home and laboratory for her unorthodox research into senility. Doctor Gorham, a world-renowned brain researcher, perfected a procedure that enabled her to transfer her elderly residents' consciousness from their own aged, frail bodies into those of young, healthy people. Reluctant to grow old gracefully, her wealthy reprobate retirees paid fees of up to $5 million each to escape from their aging bodies and move into newer models — even though those newer models were already occupied by new members of the Institute's staff.

Chu shite Bomb!

Magazine [(Number of volumes: 2)(Year(s) of publication: 1994-1995)(Publisher: Kodansha)(Author: Kurita Riku)]

The title of the manga sums up the story, chu is the onomatopoeic sound for a kiss. "Shite" being translated to roughly "to do" action wise and Bomb being the noise which resulted from a kiss. If that explanation only help to confuse you, just read on. The plot revolves around a 15 year old boy named Oozora Haruhiko, who was living alone in an old house while his parent's work over sea. While moving in, he discovered a secret passage which leads to an underground laboratory. Inside the lab, he found a naked little girl sleeping in an egg shaped capsule. Oozora awoke the girl when he opened it, and decided to ring the police, giving the girl hot cocoa while she waited. When his back was turned the girl (Daisy) become a very lovely, built 15 year old. It turned out that hot food makes her older while cold food makes her younger. There is also the fact that if she kisses anyone she took on their form, so when Daisy kissed Oozora, he fainted dead away.

It became clear that Daisy was not just an ordinary girl, nor is she an ordinary android either. Though she may protests the super natural powers she is also endearingly human in a part girl part child way. Haruhiko decides to keep Daisy's existence a secret by keeping her home as much as possible, but things change when Daisy stars following him to school. As a result, Haruhiko passed Daisy as his half sister. Daisy's unusual nature is rather hard to keep as a secret and pretty soon some shady characters appears to whisk Daisy away for some sinister motive.

City of Lost Children

Movie: (Dream)

perhaps the ultimate aging and regressing scene in movie history. The movie takes place in a world where an evil man named Crank tries to steal children's dreams to stay young. A little girl taps into his mind at the end, giving Crank all her dreams, and causing him to grow progressively younger in an astonishing morphing sequence. As he grows younger, she begins to grow older, reaching adulthood, middle age, and finally old age as Crank becomes a toddler. All the morphs are done using older and younger computer-enhanced look-a-like. It looks astounding and is very, very convincing. Highest possible rEcommendation!

He's also quite evil, putting people into comas to use them as his parent's and killing people to protect his secret. Eventually, Spike (the main hero) Manges to return time to the boy, and he rapidly Ages, quickly bEcoming too old to stay alive. Really cool episode, for that and also for the fact that pretty much nothing can hurt the kid except for what eventually returns time to him, which makes for some nice, dramatic moments as Spike tries to stop the kid from killing people. Not the best of Cowboy Bebop's episodes, but still pretty nice.

Criss Angel Mindfreak

TV Series: Season 03; Episode #04: "Screwed" (06/19/2007)

Famed illusionist Criss Angel finds 8 year old girl in boutique where his girlfriend and the girl's mom are clothes shopping. He asks the girl if she would like to be 20, and she eagerly agrees. He puts her in adult size coat and hat, stands her up on a table, and tells her to visualize herself as a twenty year old, slowly growing. We see the oversized coat rising up from behind, the girl's hat and possibly long dark hair under the brim slowly climbing to adult height. She twirls around, the hat sliding away, and it's revealed she now has an adult face and body. Instead of the former preteen ending up nude under the coat, her blue jeans, garment top and shoes fortunately also became adult sized. Now sounding like a college girl, she says she feels older; hops from the table; looks in the mirror and shrieks, amazed that she became 20; and excitedly runs off to tell her mom. (AA AP)

Book: by Lynne Rae Perkins

Debbie, who wishes that something would happen so she'll be a different person, and Hector, who feels he is unfinished, narrate most of the novel. Both are 14 years old. Hector is a fabulous character with a wry humor and an appealing sense of self-awareness. A secondary story involving Debbie's locket that goes missing in the beginning of the tale and is passed around by a number of characters emphasizes the theme of the book. The descriptive, measured writing includes poems, prose, haiku, and question-and-answer formats. There is a great deal of humor in this gentle story about a group of childhood friends facing the crossroads of life and how they wish to live it. Young teens will certainly relate to the self-consciousnesses and uncertainty of all of the characters, each of whom is straining toward clarity and awareness. (Possible aP)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Apt. 3W

Book Hardcover

(story - Collier's, 27 May 1922) The hero is born fully grown. Throughout his life he grows younger instead of aging. He attends school as an old man, marries in middle-age, succeeds at business as a young man and dies as an infant. Fitzgerald collected this story in Tales of the Jazz Age and provided this comment:

"This story was inspired by a remark of Mark Twain's to the effect that it was a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end."
