THE REDWOOD FOREST VACATION 2003

I had driven through the Redwoods once before. That was in 2002 when I moved to Washington. However, Ole Dave Nickerson and I could only hang out there for a couple of hours. All the campsites were full. So we rambled on into Oregon. Leslie had never seen the Redwoods, and I was unsatisfied with my previous time. So we made a vacation of it.

We barely made it south of Tacoma before my car started overheating. We pulled over into Fort Lewis and let it cool down. Then we headed back home and transfered everything into Leslie's car. Her car has no cd player, so we left the cd's at home. In Grants Pass, OR, Leslie's starter decided it wanted a vacation too, and ceased to work. Her car was towed to a mechanic. We rented a car and persevered. The rental had a cd player, but now we had no cd's. And I really wanted Leslie to hear Abbey Road.

It may have taken us three cars, but we made it to the Redwoods. We went on an eight mile hike to Tall Trees Grove, camping a few miles from there at an old miners camp. There was no one around for miles that night. We were utterly isolated.

This was the tallest tree in the world. 320 feet. But a storm blew the top off at some point in the past. Now it is a paltry 300 feet.

This tree was located at Elk Prairie.

When things are this silly, one cannot help but play the tourist.

"Who's Paul Bunyan!"

"I SAID. WHO'S PAUL BUNYAN!!"

Here we are in a little area of Tall Trees Grove.
