The War Years

In the beginning

Letters from Home
A recreation of life in Guadalupe, California in 1944 from comments in letters by my mom to my dad and from personal memories. To be added later.

The 165 days in the combat zone, Luzon, The Philippines, 1945. A limited recreation of what my dad faced and experienced from whatever comments I can find in letters from him to my mom and from a few memories of comments he made about his war experiences.

Japanese mementos

Slideshow of Japanese robe

An unidentified robe

This particular garment is very unusual. It appears suitable for a child due to its size and to the nature of the pattern of Japanese soldiers and weapons of war coupled with blocks of animal images. It is also unusual in that there is a short sleeve on the right side of the garment while the left side appears to never have been designed to hold a similar sleeve (but is it possible that it is missing or is an incomplete garment). There are also drops of what appears to be blood along the collar area of the upper left side.
