While garrisoned on Luzon the news of the surrender of the
Japanese came around August 15, 1945. While there was the
expected rush of celebration, knowledge of redeployment of the
25th Division as the occupation force of Japan was not certain.
However, a couple of days later, August 17, 1945, my dad wrote
(on August 18, 1945) " . . . Today me and Perkins went to town and
we just got back a little while ago. Probably my last trip here. I got
a few souvenirs while I was there . . . " Apparently he purchased several items for both his wife and kids, as well as some things for his mother. The items that have survived are a couple of handbags and a pair of wooden shoes. July 2, 2007 © Jerry Copeland |
