The War Years

Letters from Home
A recreation of life in Guadalupe, California in 1944 from comments in letters by my mom to my dad and from personal memories. To be added later.

The 165 days in the combat zone, Luzon, The Philippines, 1945. A limited recreation of what my dad faced and experienced from whatever comments I can find in letters from him to my mom and from a few memories of comments he made about his war experiences.

When my dad was reassigned to overseas he was in the 274 Rep. Co., 14th Rep. Bu. As of March 26, 1945 his unit became Co. F, 161st Infantry. He saw 91 continuous days of combat in Luzon, the Philippines, from early March into early June 1945. He was rotated to a resting area and was part of the occupation forces in Japan at which time he was assigned to Co. 4, 4th Infantry.

The Souvenirs of War

Images after the war

Written Friday evening, December 8, 1944,and mailed Saturday, December 9, 1944, as my mother approached her 22nd birthday on December 10. This letter typifies a day in the life of my mother during this period. Much of her time was filled with the tedium of doing those things necessary in order to keep what quality of life was available to her at a tolerable level.

Dearest Darling

Hello dear, how are you tonite?
I hope you are fine. One more day

To tell the truth I will dear. Has

Gosh just think next week you'll
be through with your training &
then I hope I'm not disappointed
& you get home in time for Christmas.
I've just been making some fudge
candy with walnuts in it. It
tasted sure good. I wish I'd of made
some before now & had been sending
it to you. but I hadn't but I will
from now on. I think you'll like it.
We are fine. That Mike hasn't been
asleep long I put him & Jerry to bed
at 7:30 & Jerry went to sleep, but Mike
didn't & he was up until almost
nine. Your mother came out by here
at bout eight from work & I was
making candy. She held him awhile.
I put him in bed finally & he went
to sleep. I wish his bed was in the
front room to. & then I wouldn't
disturb him when I'm working
in here and around. I washed to

damp out & has been foggy all
day. I didn't have such a big
washing tho. but I was really
tired tonite, after I cleaned the
house up &
