| James Henry Tindall may have been born in
Montgomery County, North Carolina about
1773. While young, he moved to
South Carolina. James married Mary
(her last name has not been recovered).
She was born about 1785. According to the 1820 Census
of Sumter District, South Carolina, James
Tindall was born between 1775 and 1794.
There were two males born between 1804
and 1810 and three males born between
1810 and 1820. There was one female
(probably Mary) born between 1775 and
1794. There was one female born
between 1794 and 1804, one female born
between 1804 and 1810, and three females
born between 1810 and 1820.
According to the census James owned five
slaves.
James died prior to
February 2, 1829, the date that the
Administration of his estate was file in
the Sumter County Court House. The
administrators were Mary Tindall and
James H. Tindall. According to the
appraisal, James owned about 800 acres
situated on the waters of the Santee at
Jack's Creek in Clarendon County.
According to the
1830 Census of Sumter District, South
Carolina, the family of James Tindall
consisted of one female born between 1780
and 1790, one male and one female born
between 1800 and 1810, two males born
between 1810 and 1815, two males born
between 1815 and 1820, one female born
between 1820 and 1825, and two females
born between 1825 and 1830. The
census indicates that there were 25
slaves.
According to the
1840 Census of Sumter District, South
Carolina, Mary was the head of the house
hold and was born between 1780 and 1790.
There were two other females in the house.
One was born between 1820 and 1825.
The other was born between 1825 and 1830.
Mary had 23 slaves. Fifteen people
were employed in agriculture.
According
to the 1850 Census of Horry District, a
Mary Tindall, age 66, was living with J.
W. Tindall, age 38. According to
the census, Mary was a farmer and her
real estate was valued at $200.00.
All were born in South Carolina. It
appears that Mary died sometime after
1850.
Issue:
1. James Henry Tindall was born in South Carolina
in 1806 and died on November 22, 1886.
He married Sarah Allen (1816-1905).
Sarah was the daughter of Sarah and Ezra
Allen who died on October 21, 1842.
Sarah and James Tindall are buried in the
Baptist Cemetery in Summerton, South
Carolina.
2. Elizabeth
Tindall was born in South Carolina on
February 17, 1808. On February 29,
1837, she married Levy Frances Rhame (1798-1873).
Levy had previously been married to
Elizabeth M. Wells (1810-1836).
According to the 1860 Census, Elizabeth
and Levy were living in Clarendon
District, South Carolina. According
to the census, Levy was a farmer with
real estate valued at $1,500 and personal
property valued at $2,000.
Elizabeth (Tindall) Rhame and Levy are
buried in the cemetery at Calvary Baptist
Church. Elizabeth died on January 26,
1875.
3. John W. Tindall was born about 1810 and
died sometime after October 24, 1843. He
married Eliza E. (her last name has not
been recovered). He moved to
Williamsburg District, South Carolina.
4. Samuel S. Tindall was born about 1811.
From the census records it appears that
his wife's first name was either Camilla
or Camellia.
5. Henry Fox Tindall was born in Clarendon
County, South Carolina, on March 24, 1813,
and died in Clarendon County, South
Carolina, on November 15, 1874. In
1837, Henry married (first) Margaret
Allen and on December 29, 1842, he
married (second) Martha Mary Rhame (1826-1919).
Martha and Henry are buried in the
cemetery at Calvary Baptist Church.
6. Andrew Jackson Tindall was born on February 19,
1815, and died on June 24, 1901. He
married Elizabeth A. Harvin (1818-1902).
They are buried in the Manning Cemetery
in Manning, South Carolina.
7. Rebecca
Tindall was born in South Carolina about
1817. She married (first) Henry
Sourhaver and around 1838, she married (second)
Hugh F. Touchberry. According to
the 1860 Census, Rebecca and Hugh were
living in Clarendon District, South
Carolina. According to the census,
Hugh was a farmer with real estate valued
at $1,500 and personal property valued at
$2,000.
8. Ann Scott
Tindall was born On December 22, 1818,
and died on February 9, 1902. She
married Charles R. Harvin (1815-1867).
They are buried in the Manning Cemetery.
9. Temperance
J. Tindall was born on September 24, 1823.
She married Matthew Henry Connors (1819-
1882). For ten years, Temperance
was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Temperance died on September 21, 1849.
She and her husband are buried in Connors
Cemetery in Clarendon County, South
Carolina.
10. Agnes F.
Tindall was born on July 6, 1827.
On February 14, 1844, Agnes married
Washington Allen (1821-1909).
According
to the 1860 Census of Sumter District,
Washington Allen lived with his family in
the Bradford Springs area.
Washington was a farmer. His real
estate was valued at $2,000.00 and his
personal property was valued at $25,000.00.
Agnes died on February 4, 1910. She
and Washington are buried in the cemetery
at High Hills Baptist Church in Sumter,
South Carolina.
