| One of the special projects of the Col. John B. Palmer Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has been the adoption of the old Zion Church Cemetery on Upper Pig Pen in Yancey County. The cemetery was badly overgrown when the Camp took on this project. The cemetery was cleared of trees and underbrush, and broken or fallen stones were fixed or replaced. There are at least six Confederate veterans buried in the cemetery. Many of the graves in the cemetery are marked only with field stones. The Zion Baptist Church was established ca.1800, and this cemetery, near the church, is one of the oldest in the county. Other groups have stepped forward to help. The Ayers Family Association wants to place a fence around the cemetery. They are seeking donations to help with this endeavor.
