Home Who was Col. John B. Palmer What is the SCV? Monthly Meetings Old Zion Cemetery Martha Reid Silver Confederate Memorial Association Contact Us

The Col. John B. Palmer meets once a month for a regular meeting. We normally meet the third Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Burnsville Town Center in beautiful downtown Burnsville, North Carolina. A meal, provided by the wonderful ladies of the Martha Reid Silver Confederate Memorial Association, is served. The business portion of the meeting starts shortly after 7:00 p.m., and is followed by a special speaker, possibly a camp member or another SCV member from the area. Topics in the past have included relic hunting, Colonel Palmer’s life, antique photographs, the medical service during the war, clothing worn by soldiers and civilians, and the battle of Hanover Court House, Virginia, among many others.

These meetings are open to the general public and we invite you to attend and bring a guest.

Not only does Camp 1946 have monthly meetings (except in December when we have a Christmas banquet), but we are also extremely active in the community. The Col. John B. Palmer camp participates in heritage festivals in each of the three counties, members participate in the Burnsville Christmas parade, and they work diligently to document the graves of Confederate soldiers in the Toe River Valley area. Since 2001, Camp 1946 has installed over 80 government headstones in Yancey, Mitchell, and Avery Counties. They have also cleaned several cemeteries, fixed broken and damaged markers, and have adopted the Old Zion Church Cemetery.
