| Warning: This is a very important step in the conversion. If you dont know by now these engines have a problem with stuck glow plugs when they are not maintained properly. Read some of the mercedeshop.com posts to get idea what can go wrong. It can be a really simple job but if there is a problem it gets ugly fast. Using the glow plug reamer will help prevent stuck glow plugs in the future. It can be found on the tools page. Do not force any of the glow plugs or they will break off. If it does break off you have a couple options. Go to the mercedesshop.com website and do a search for stuck glow plugs . This is a good link for a stuck glow plug. http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=109101 This is the link where I learned to change mine out. Lots of good pictures. http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=88574&highlight=stuck+glow+plug 1. Remove the electrical clips from each glow plug. Squeeze the sides and pull straight back. You my also want to remove the bolts holding the black plastic channel which the glow plug wires run through. This will allow better access to the back glow plug 2. Using the 12 mm deep socket remove each glow plug. Try to find an easy one first so you get a feel for how hard they are to get out. Take your time and do not break any of them off or you will have a lot of work to do. If you are having trouble removing some spray some of the penetrating fluid in the hole and wait a little while. You should not have to stand on the wrench but it will take some muscle to get them out. Make sure you use the deep socket like the one described on the tools page that only touches the flat part of the hex to prevent rounding. 3. Use the reamer to clean each glow plug hole. Put a little clean vegetable on the reamer for each use. This will prevent some of the carbon from falling onto the chamber. Thread it all the way in and remove it. Wipe it off and repeat once or twice 4. Replace each of the old glow plug with the new one. Put some anti-seize material on the threads of the glow plug. Threads only. 5. Torque each of the glow plugs to 20 NM 6. Reinstall the plastic electrical clips and the bolts for the plastic electrical tray. |
