Rubik's World Championships 2003Day 2 of competition - 24 AugustHome | RWC2003 | Pre-competition gathering | Day 1 | Day 2 | Banquet | News article All the finals, and the specialty events, were held on Sunday in the auditorium of the Ontario Science Centre. The most popular event, the 3x3x3 speedsolve, had a great many competitors and so the qualification round for that event continued on Sunday as well. At the end of the competition there was a presentation ceremony for all the prize winners.
The portable stage and huge Rubik's cubes were moved from the Galaxy Room (venue for Day 1 activities) to the main auditorium of the Ontario Science Centre. Everything is still being setup as cubers and media people start to gather.
First up on Sunday morning was the rest of the 3x3x3 speedsolve qualification round.
Here's Ton Dennenbroek during the 3x3x3 qualification round. Ton is a master puzzle builder. He also sells cubes that are pre-prepared for speedsolving - including to some of the top cubers at RWC 2003.
David Allen - the guy with the superfast fingertricks that amazed us all.
David Barr in the 3x3x3 qualification round.
Rune Wesstrom in the 3x3x3 qualification round. Rune was the oldest competitor at RWC2003.
And here's little Wiktoria Zborowska, the youngest competitor at RWC2003. She's only 7 years old. Her dad, Zbigniew (a semi-finalist speedcuber), watches as the clock starts for Wiktoria's 3x3x3 qualification time trial.
Wiktoria finishes her solve in 100 seconds. Very impressive for someone so young. Someone should have given her something to stand on, we can barely see her behind the giant Rubik's cube!
Here's one of the 3 New York guys who all made last minute entries in the 3x3x3 speedsolve. Crazy hair, dude.

More cubers doing their 3x3x3 time trials. Front left here is school teacher Ian Winokur. I hope Ian's students are very impressed by his RWC2003 adventures!
Another one of the last-minute-entrants from NY (front left). On the cube behind NY guy is Mirek Goljan. Mirek's specialty is the fewest moves challenge and is now the official world champ in that category. He's also a very fast speedsolver as well. Front right is Michael Swart.
Here's me competing in the Rubik's Clock event. We only had one shot at the Clock. I got second place with 42 seconds - only a few seconds behind Jaap Scherphuis (winner of the Clock event).
Here's Jaap Scherphuis and his first-place-winning solve of the Rubik's Clock.
Here's Lars Vandenbergh solving the Rubik's Clock. Lars came 3rd in this event.

Media frenzy at the 3x3x3 speedsolve final. Here we see Dan Knights and Jessica Fridrich amongst a sea of media people and cameras.
