  • The author of the high school planner values safety in a productive learning environment. The author feels that by implementing a stringent dress code, the students will comply to the author?s idea of a school that upholds high standards. The author also feels that school is not a place for revealing clothing, and this type of dress can cause distractions to students and teachers. Finally, this author upholds a high moral standard of what should be displayed on clothing. The author believes that profane images or languages on clothing may be offensive to others.

As a group we agreed with this policy and the values it tries to uphold. We believe that a school environment should not be the place to promote one?s fashion, but rather a place to learn. We felt that the policy did not inhibit students? constitutional right to freedom of expression because the policy allows for variation.

This text benefits students, teachers, parents, and school officials. The students may not realize that they are benefiting from this policy at the time, but one day they will, just as we have. The students benefit because it reduces competition between one another, which ultimately reduces violence. Parents benefit from this policy by being assured that their students will be safe when they go to school. Also, they benefit because school dress codes are a controlling device on what their children are wearing. Finally, school officials benefit because there is more structure in their school district.

The author raises several different values throughout "Manual on School Uniforms." The biggest value that is stressed in the article is the idea of getting a good education while being safe at school. The author pushes so hard for uniforms because he feels that they would help the school to be a much safer environment where learning will take place. The author also values the idea of student expression especially when it comes to religion. He feels that "a school uniform policy must accommodate students whose religious beliefs are substantially burdened by a uniform requirement" and also that "a uniform policy may not prohibit students from wearing expressive items" (US Department of Education). The author also states the importance of parental involvement and parental consent. He feels that along with teacher and school officials, parents should have a very strong role in deciding what is best for their children. Finally, the author values the idea of helping those who are less fortunate than others. He wants to help any student whose parents cannot afford uniforms, so that no one will be left out or excluded.

When we read this particular article we were very persuaded by what the author had to say due to our values. Megan was raised in a catholic school where she wore a uniform everyday. She is definitely an advocate for uniforms based on her own personal experience with them. We think that students can focus better on school when they are in a uniform and believe that they make school a safer place. Uniforms eliminate students comparing their clothing with each other and thinking that they are better than someone based on clothing style. We also like the idea of helping the less fortunate to be able to afford a uniform as well. Finally, we value the idea of parental involvement in the lives of their children. Again, based on our families, we value parents and their active involvement in schools and their children?s activities.

This text serves many people?s interests such as parents, teachers, students and school officials. For parents and school officials this article shows why uniforms would be a good idea in order to maintain a safe atmosphere. Also, this article shows how to implement a constitutional uniform policy. For students, uniforms would be a way to unify the whole school community and reduce the competition between them. Finally, this article definitely wants to transform from the old ways and have students in public schools wear uniforms.

When reading "Do They Reduce Violence..." through a normative way of thinking there are definitely certain norms being illustrated. For instance, uniforms do not always reduce violence in schools. There are universal moral and ethical values such as thinking ideas through completely and weighing the positive and negative consequences equally unbiased before making decisions. Also, the concept of having respect for others? differences and understanding that if something works for one, it may not be the best solution for someone/something else. We basically have the same values as the article and ones that the authors promote to their readers, even though we were able to see the benefits of school uniforms.

Further, we thought that educators have the most to gain because this text gives them a wake-up call to not automatically jump on the uniform bandwagon but instead assess the consequences both positive and negative. In addition, the magazine, Education Week and the writers benefit from the profits and feedback from the readers. Students also benefit from the decision educators and administrators make by reading this article. The text promotes keeping things the same and not rush to the idea of uniforms without proven evidence in the reduction of violence in schools. Most public schools do not have uniforms and have not changed to this mandatory dress code policy.

After reading these texts analytically, interpretively, and normatively, we concluded that uniforms are beneficial to schools and everyone involved. We feel that the recent violence in American schools is alarming and needs attention. If school uniforms were implemented throughout the United States, then maybe the problem of school violence could be reduced. This topic will continue to be debated as long as school violence continues to be an issue. As future parents and teachers, we feel it is our duty to promote a safe school environment with the help of school dress codes or uniforms.
