Gear was commissioned to work as the security system for the Blackstar prison, which was in actuality little more than a slavery planet to house unwanted trouble-makers. Although his people are prone to serving their purpose without emotion, he found himself disturbed by the plight of the prison's inmates and had been waiting for the opportunity to shut down the prison. He saw his chance when Sensor was admitted after being drugged in her encounter with Lord Pernisius. With her help, he freed the inmates but was severely damaged. Sensor returned to the Legion and admitted Gear into the care of Brainiac 5.1 for repairs.
Gear has the native Linsnerian ability to produce techno-organic mechanisms naturally from his own body.
