Gates was inducted into the Legion through the UP draft, but refused to be part of a "paramilitary group". Eventually he did make his way into the Legion and has been a source of extreme political commentary ever since, but he has grown to respect his team-mates and has even developed an odd friendship with Brainiac 5.1. Gates is fairly unique among his people in that he has an independent personality. Only the corrupt Mantis Morlo can claim this as well.
Gates has the ability to form teleportation disks that can transport himself and others up to 200 feet, preferably within his line of sight.
During the year that half of the Legion was "Lost" in uncharted space, Gates was assumed to be with the Lost Legionnaires, but he was actually secretly captured by the UP Science Police under orders of President McCauley and the study of his genetic makeup allowed the UP to recreate his teleportation abilities in more Vyrgans, which they used to power the FootStep Drive engines. |
