From
age six she trained to be a figure skater in the Olympics. A
freak accident shattered that dream when she was 16. Dancing
at an outdoor party, someone stepped accidentally on her strapless
gown, and as it slipped she dashed for the house. She broke
through a sliding glass door she thought was open, and suffered
severe injuries and blood loss. She was hospitalized for eight
weeks, but finds the bloody memory helps her acting. (Ref.

The
only daughter of a former actress and a jazz musician, Allison
Janney was raised in Dayton, Ohio, like her "The West Wing"
castmates Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe. It was Janney's mother,
in particular, who encouraged Allison to pursue her dream of
acting.

Cregg on "The West Wing" is Janney's first television role since
she starred in the short-lived television series "Morton and
Hayes." Predominantly a film and theatre actress, Janney counts
among her feature film credits "Big Night," "Private Parts,"
"Primary Colors," "The Object of My Affection," "Six Days Seven
Nights," "The Ice Storm," "Celebrity," "10 Things I Hate About
You," "Drop Dead Gorgeous," the Academy Award-winning film "American
Beauty" with Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening and the upcoming
feature film "Nurse Betty" with Morgan Freeman and Renée Zellweger.
In
1998, Janney was nominated for a Tony Award, and she won the
Outer Critics Circle award and the Drama Desk award for Best
