Excerpt from NBC's official Bio:

The only daughter of a former actress and a jazz musician, Allison Janney was raised in Dayton, Ohio, like her "The West Wing" castmates Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe. It was Janney's mother, in particular, who encouraged Allison to pursue her dream of acting.

C.J. Cregg on "The West Wing" is Janney's first television role since she starred in the short-lived television series "Morton and Hayes." Predominantly a film and theatre actress, Janney counts among her feature film credits "Big Night," "Private Parts," "Primary Colors," "The Object of My Affection," "Six Days Seven Nights," "The Ice Storm," "Celebrity," "10 Things I Hate About You," "Drop Dead Gorgeous," the Academy Award-winning film "American Beauty" with Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening and the upcoming feature film "Nurse Betty" with Morgan Freeman and Renée Zellweger.

In 1998, Janney was nominated for a Tony Award, and she won the Outer Critics Circle award and the Drama Desk award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Arthur Miller's "A View From The Bridge" on Broadway.

In the summer of 1999, Janney starred in the New York Public Theater production of William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" in the Shakespeare in the Park series.

In what little free time she has, Janney likes to relax in Vermont. She resides in New York City. Reference A
