Oakwood native Allison
Janney won an Emmy award for best supporting actress in a drama
as White House press secretary C.J. on the NBC drama West Wing
last Sunday. In 1998 on Broadway, she was nominated for a Tony
award for best performance by a leading actress in a play for
her role in A View From The Bridge.
Janney also played
opposite Frank Langella in the Noel Coward comedy Present Laughter
in 1997. She has appeared in numerous movies, most recently as
the emotionally-traumatized housewife in American Beauty as well
as roles in Ice Storm, Primary Colors and The Object of My Affection.
She attended the Miami
Valley School while living in Oakwood where, according to family
friend Jane Kuntz, she got her first break in high school as Domina
in the comedy A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to The Forum.
She then continued her thespian career at Kenyon College and also
studied with actress Joanne Woodward.
On Sept. 29, Janney
is due to return to town with fellow West Wing castmates and Oakwood
favorite sons Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe to participate in a Democratic
Party fundraiser.

go for the gold

“The West Wing”
actress Allison Janney was visibly shaking after being announced
best supporting actress in a drama series. Taking the stage, she
delivered her acceptance speech with grace and humility, thanking
the other women in her category.
“I’m standing here
for one reason: because of the sheer inspiration I’ve received
from watching other actresses over my life, particularly in the
theater. Four of them are in this category, especially the exquisite,
elegant Nancy Marchand,” Janney said.

Winning
Emmy Lines
If prizes were awarded for Best Acceptance Speeches, Allison Janney
of NBC's "The West Wing" would grab the honors for Classiest
Lines. Accepting her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama
Series, Janney (who plays CJ on the NBC political drama) told
the audience at the 52 Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: "I'm
standing here for one reason: because of the sheer inspiration
I've received from watching other actresses over my life, particularly
in the theatre. Four of them are in this category, especially
the exquisite, elegant Nancy Marchand." Marchand, 71, died
of lung cancer in June.
