Buying and Taking Care Of Your Ball Python's Terrarium
Choosing a good home for your slithery pet is an integral part of taking care of them. I find the best choice is to start off with a twenty gallon long aquarium. Unless of cource you have a full grown adult, in that case my choice would be a fifty gallon. The most important part of choosing the home is to not make it to big and spacy but, also not so small where they cant get any exercise, they should be able to have different atmospheres to move to if one gets to hot or cold/to dry or to wet.
OK, now that you have bought the aquarium, the fun part begins. You get to create what it will look like. I will give an example (MINE) I have a 20 gallonl long. The items are as follows:
- Reptile carpet(astroturf from petco)
- A piece of cardboard from a shoebox which she can get into; on the cool side
- A water bowl big enough for the snake to submerge its body. Not to deep because pythons arent the best swimmers, they can drown in to much water.
- A store bought branch(Never use things from your backyard it can make the snake sick and might be carrying mites.
- A ceramic cave under the basking light
- A heat rock wrapped in a sock in a small cardboard box because balls would rather be hiding and when they arent they are kind of stressed out, its in a sock because they have been known to burn snakes.(Heat pad is a better choice)
- Two stick on thermometers
- Heat lamp on top of a screen top
- Screen top I like the screen top because it allows you to vary the humidity unlike a plastic top that can get to humid and cause moisture problems in the skin.
Recently, I was thinking about changing around MEDEA'S (Thats my ball pythons name, the site is named after her) terrarium. I was thinking about building a two floors inside the terrarium. Pythons are known for loving to go under ground and get away from the heat. I figure I could just buy a piece of wood and set it up in there as a divider. And make a little ramp to get up to the top. Well if anyone here has this type of set up with the two floors

I would love to hear about it.
