PAKISTAN is a country in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent. To the east and southeast is India, to the west is Iran, and to the north are Afghanistan, the former Soviet Union, and China. Mountains stretch down to the Arabian Sea and below them is the broad valley of the Indus River. There are four distinct areas: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the North West Frontier Province. Four tributaries of the mighty Indus water the plateau of the Punjab, the area of Pakistan most blessed by nature. Other regions of the country, Balochistan for example, are different in character and impose harsher conditions on the people who live there. The regional differences in landscape and fertility of the soil mirror the differences of the peoples who live off the land.
