Cricket is the national sport, but other games are also played. Field hocky and soccer feature on the timetable of most schools, and although Pakistan's national soccer team has not achieved any notable success, the country's field hockey team is always a force to be reckoned with in international competitions. Volleyball, tennis,Snooker and squash are also popular games, and Pakistan is frequently the world champion in squash.
There are very few organized sports for women, apart from badminton and table tennis, which are played in schools and colleges. Moslem clerics tend to frown on the idea of women participating in any public sport.
Outside the towns and cities, and apart from school events, there is
little organized sport. One of the most popular village sports is cockfighting.
Roosters have special small spurs fitted to their legs and before they
battle it out, sometimes fatally, the spectators place their illicit bets.
A less bloody sport is kabaddi ("ka-BAD-i"), a form of wrestling that is
especially popular in the Punjab.
