A UFO researcher intent on gathering data along U.S. Highway 666 encountered
a change of plans when he was forced off the highway by someone entirely terrestrial.
James Patten, author and researcher had planned an ambitious 340 mile bicycle
trip from Monticello, Utah, which was to begin Oct. 4th and end Oct. 8th or
9th. His destination was Gallup, New Mexico. According to Patten, "I got
the idea to take on the beast when I was reading material that stated that this
strip of road had more UFO sightings than any other in the country."
The former Expert Infantryman was in the process of collecting information from
his surroundings via a magnetic field sensor, Geiger counter, camera, and tape
recorder.
On Oct. 6th Patten was leaving Cortez, Colorado, when he was followed by a Federal
police car for a short time.
Four hours later when he was 11 miles north of Shiprock, New Mexico near the
Ute Mountain Indian Reservation, he was forced off the road by a blue Air Force-type
mechanics truck. The civilian driver "pulled right in front of me and stopped
suddenly forcing me into the ditch. He then got out of the truck and inspected
his tires and adjusted his mirror. He never once looked at me." Fatigue
and shock prevented Patten from responding to the attack. A bedroll packed on
top of the small trailor Patten was pulling behind him broke his fall. Luckily
he sustained only minor scratches from the incident. However, the bike's front
fork and rim were seriously damaged.
Forty-five minutes after the crash, a traveller from California stopped to give
aid but Patten declined the man's offer. Patten later encountered the same individual
in a fast food restaurant in Shiprock, New Mexico. He accepted a ride in the
man's small station wagon and travelled 90 miles to Gallup, New Mexico.
The many mysteries of the Ute Mountain area and Highway 666 remain unsolved.
However, Patten has literally and figuratively brushed off the dust from his
experience and already plans a future trip down Devil's Highway.
