Leaflet No. 7> Translation

Congratulating residents for a successful Bijoya congregation, as well as a pointer to other, gloomier issues. This is a printable gif image with transparent areas between black text. The background white of the webpage is showing through.

English Translation (well..., more or less)

Dear Neighbour,

What a HUGE success the Bijoya Sammelani was! Thank you, and Congratulations! The foundations of our unity are much stronger now. The main credit for this success goes to you - the people who have risen unitedly in demanding a civilized way of life. Chorus with Tapasbabu, Odissi dance, Punjabi bhangra, Har-bola(how do we translate this? No idea! A mimic perhaps...one who can mimic everything, from a steam engine to a howling dog in a stormy night - Benoy Majumdar, member, was the performer. What hidden talents the movement has unearthed!). Lastly, that furious Antakshari!(fought between groups or individuals in which a continuous string of couplets is sung. Each must begin within a count of 10 and the first alphabet must be the same as the last alphabet of the previous one. Very poplular in India.). If that dry-as-deadwood Joint Secretary hadn't intervened things would have rolled past midnight. When have we last spent such a warm and happy evening in this region? Let the monsters of pollution retreat. and Long Live Parivesh Suraksha movement. But organizers are grumbling, could we have contributed Rs 10/- more?

Pond - Members had a meeting with the Councillor, ward 93 on the 27th of October(2002). To learn about the current status of the "pond-project". Money is not the real problem, it appeared, even though there are some bureaucratic and legal hassels. He assured us that those will be resolved soon. December? But one thing is becoming clearer by the day, the renovation would be too expensive if we are to do it on our own. Beyond the scope of a monthly subscription of Rs 20/-. But it is our right to have the pond renovated. In case of a fire accident, the pond could prove vital. We must continually engage the authority if we are to find a long-lasting solution to this problem.

Threats - Meanwhile, we must STAY UNITED(residents have agreed upon the need for unity on 15th August). Illegal activites are slowly on the rise. A "No Parking" sign before the pharmacy has been stolen recently , that too on a busy evening. The social environment is being regularly polluted by a strong stench of liquor from somewhere near the unauthorized structures, filthy language used by "store-hands" during their increasingly frequent tiffs, the ruckus of card games openly on the streets. We must be alert against these.

An Appeal - An impromptu rickshaw stand seems to be developing opposite Ushakiran and the Bank. Members have discovered the use of ganja just there. What next - HEROIN? And then ROBBERY? These days there is a sufeit of rickshaws plying on the road. Must we indulge this unauthorized stand?

HAPPY GREETINGS for DEEPABOLI!

Bijoya Sammelani - Following the immersion of the idols of Goddess Durga, and till Deepaboli, Bengalis engage in a lot of socialization, wish each other "Shubho Bijoya"(Shubho = auspicious + happy; Bijoya = this particular period), visit each others' place with sweets and generally have a happy time. They also frequently congregate(sammelan or "Shommelon") on a community basis, have a party and organize cultural functions. In our previous state of dark isolation this would have been impossible. The Parivesh Suraksha Committee managed to pull off a grand Bijoya Sammelani with a fabulous feast, a lot of singing and dancing, and a good time altogether
