Wheel Horse Safari Snowmobiles

Model Year 1972
Research and questions have uncovered that the last production runs of Wheel Horse snowmobiles did not take place in the factory in Des Moines, but were in fact done in South Bend, Indiana.  My source did not have specific details on when this occurred, only that the fine folks who normally assembled garden tractors in South Bend had a VERY DIFFICULT time trying to build snowmobiles.

When they completed the 1972 model year and the decision had been made to discontinue production, all of the remaining parts were sold to a company named Parts Unlimited, who continued support until the parts ran out in the late 70s or early 80s.

1972 Safari Snowmobile Brochure
If you look closely at the brochure and the photos below, you can see the change in the decals for the 1972 model year.  The rest of the sled remained mostly unchanged in design.  The 1972 supplemental parts list is only four pages, including the cover, some notes and two pages that list the updated parts.  You can see a picture of the cover of that manual below.
This is a 1972 Safari 399.  Check out the specs on the sheet above.  These photos were sent to me by a guy named Bryan from Wisconsin.
On the left here is a copy of the cover of the 1972 Owners Manual.  The cover changed, but the material inside is all the same as the 1970 model.  Thanks go to Dennis for sending me a copy of this one that came with a sled he bought!!
Over on the right is a cover shot of the 1972 supplemental parts manual.  The majority of the parts did not change in the three years that Wheel Horse made the Safari.
