| Officially, there are no 1971 models. No 1971 models are listed in the Wheel Horse Master Model List in the engineering files. All of the models produced in 1970 and 1972 are listed. I think perhaps as a result of customer demand, slow sales or even an overstocked inventory, customized upgraded models were made available in either late 1970 or early 1971. Let me be clear, This is not Fact, it is Opinion. I have no idea if these were factory or dealer level upgrades. | I first spotted this 440W for sale on ebay some time ago. I have been in contact with the current owner Matt from Canada, who has sent me some more recent pictures of it. Thanks Matt!! It appears that this sled began life as a 309W. The model number plate under the hood says 9-0061 which would indicate the same. As you can see it has been upgraded to a 440 motor, and had decals added to match. I believe someone took a pair of 440 decals and cut out the number to cover up the 309. This would explain both the matching font as well as why the sides of the 440 are slanted. As I said above, without documentation, there is no way to know when or who did this upgrade or when this sled was actually made.
