Connect a computer to the network
To accomplish this you need:
- A physical network . If you have many computers you'll
need a structured network but if you want to connect two PCs only, a
cross-over cable will do.
- A new network card although this is standard with
most new computers
- Tthe manufacturer's driver disk if windows does not
have the drivers for your card.
Steps:
- Select network in the "control panel."
- select "add" then "adapter"
- In the dialogue that opens select the manufacturer
of your adpater and the model if its drivers are provided by windows
- Iif not select "have disk" and browse to
the location where the adapter's .inf (driver information file) file
is located, select it and click "ok"
- Windows will install the adapter for you
select "add" again and select "client" then add
the correct "client" ( client for microsoft networks or client
for netware networks) depending on the network you're connecting to
then click "ok"
- select "add" and then select "protocol"
this will list all the protocols select the appropriate one and click
"ok".The most commonly used protocol is TCP/IP select this
and click "ok".
- Configure your TCP/IP by selecting it then click
"properties"
- Iissue the computer with an ip address e.g. 192.168.0.1
and the appropriate subnet mask e.g. 255.255.255.0 and gateway, DNS
settings and click "ok"
- Select "add" again and select "services"
then select "file and printer" sharing depending on the client
you selected
- click ok (Please note that you will need the cab files
from your installation CD)
- You will need to restart your system for the settings
to take effect
