Ice Box Episode 5.01 Jailhouse Blues (1/1/2008) Edward sits in the McKean County jailhouse in Smethport, PA. He was taken from his concert at Kane Fest. He has a cell to himself. He sits and thinks about what has happened. He doesnt remember entering houses and taking things that dont belong to him. He doesnt understand how this happened. He has been in contact with his lawyer and hasnt spoken to anyone. Suddenly a guard comes by his cell and tells Edward he has a visitor. Edward gets up and heads into the visitors lounge. He sees a familiar face. Edward, my gosh, how are you? Edward looks at Elizabeth, forces a smile, and says that he wants to know whats going on. Elizabeth explains, The chief of the station caught you on tape entering and exiting a house on the west side. Hes being praised because the burglaries have stopped and he told the town hes going to run for mayor next year. Edward listens and cant believe they have a video of him at a crime scene. He asks her how real this tape is and wonders if someone is trying to frame him for the crimes. Elizabeth looks him in the eyes and says that the tape is very authentic and would be hard to fake. They would have to be very good with technology and work in Hollywood to pull this off, she says. So what youre saying is that Im going to be here for a long time, Edward says. He continues the conversation by asking Elizabeth a question. Do you think I did these deeds? he asks while moving his gaze downwards toward the floor. She puts her hand on his chin and pushes it upwards so she can look him in the eye. Of course not; however, I am worried for you. Ive been worrying about you for quite some time now. You dont have to worry though; Im working on a plan. I just hope I have enough time to get things together by the time you go to trial next week. Edward is surprised that Elizabeth knows about all this and his lawyers havent talked to him about any of this. He looks at her and asks, If I am convicted of these crimes, what would be my punishment? Am I looking at a few years? Elizabeth looks at him and with a worried face answers him, You are pry looking at three to ten years. Edward who is upset with the answer wants to know what her plan is. I cant tell you what my plan is, consider it a surprise. I will work on getting you out of here and proving the chief wrong. I cant wait to see the look on his face. Just then the guard comes over and tells Elizabeth that she must go and that Edward needs to go back to his cell. Edward and Elizabeth get up and leave. Back in Kane, PA, also known as the Ice Box, Elizabeths plan must take a pause. Jamie, Edwards younger brother, has turned 16. He convinces his mom to take him to the DMV to get his permit. They travel to Bradford to the local DMV and he passes his test. His mom drives home and the two talk in the car. Mom, whats going to happen to Edward? His mother looks at him and then back towards the road. I have no idea, but this wouldnt have happened if he was living at home and things were normal. Jamie rolls his eyes and then asks his mom if they can go see him. She gives in after he begs her a few more times. As they are heading towards Smethport, they pass Elizabeth. Jamie notices her car go by, but Elizabeth doesnt see them. Elizabeth is driving back to Kane. She doesnt go straight home. She arrives up to Edwards familys house. She notices that there is no car along the road and wonders if they are home. She gets out of the car and knocks on the door. There is no answer and she pulls out her cell phone. She calls the house to leave a message on the answering machine. Hello, this is Elizabeth. I need to speak to you about Edward. I know hes innocent and I need some family information to prove that hes innocent. Please give me a call back as soon as you can. Thank you very much. She hangs up the phone and goes home. She prepares for work.
Ice Box Episode 5.02 Mommy Dearest (1/26/2008) Elizabeth goes to work at the police station. She is put at the counter answering calls and doing paper work. The chief walks into the station with a smile that stretches from ear to ear. He walks in and is eager to tell anyone who listens about what a wonderful job he has done putting an end to the robberies. Elizabeth just looks at the chief with a disgusted face. He tells her that she did a great job suppressing the crowd at Kane Fest. I only did what I had to do, says Elizabeth. That you did, and I cant take all the credit. Oh, before I forget to tell you, the newspaper is coming by to interview me about the bust of the century, the chief says proudly. Elizabeth talks under her breath Enjoy it while you can, because soon youll be the laughing stalk of the town. The chief hears her mumble something and asks her what she said. Elizabeth says that she was just talking about the paper work on the counter. The chief tells her to get her work done and that theres no time to boast about things. She shakes her head as the chief walks into his office. She puts her hand over her forehead and just says that things have become ridiculous. Suddenly the chief pokes his head out and tells her to send the reporter in when they get to the station. She nods then returns to her paperwork. Jamie and his mother arrive to the McKean county jailhouse to see Edward. The guard gets Edward and says that his family is here to see him. Edward rolls his eyes as he sees his mother sitting in the visitors room looking grumpy. Jamie is there anxious to talk to Edward. Hey Edward! Jamie says with a big smile. Why are you so happy? Edward asks him. Well, I just got my driving permit! I cant wait to start driving. Now that I got that out, whats new with you? Jamie blurts out as fast as he can. Congratulations Jamie. Im sure youre really proud. Moms probably proud of you, too, Edward says as he glances towards their mom. His mom avoids eye contact. Jamie tells him to spill the beans about what he is doing in jail. He explains about the video, the concert, and the police taking him away. He also explains that he was not the one in the video and he doesnt understand why the police think it is him. Jamie reassures him that he will be okay and free in no time. Justice will prevail, Jamie says. Their mother finally speaks, Its time to go. I have to get dinner started so we can eat at a decent time. She stands up and the two prepare to leave. Edward tells his family that he loves them, even if he doesnt see them again. As Jamie enters the doorway he tells Edward not to talk like that. The family returns home from Smethport and Jamies mom prepares dinner. Jamie is in the dining room where the computer is and notices there is a message on the answering machine. He tells his mom, just in case the message is for her. She says she is too busy making dinner. Go ahead and listen to it and tell me what it says, okay? she tells him. He goes over to the answering machine and hits the play button. Elizabeths voice is heard. The message says, Hello, this is Elizabeth. I need to speak to you about Edward. I know hes innocent and I need some family information to prove that hes innocent. Please give me a call back as soon as you can. Thank you very much. Jamie listens and excitedly tells his mother. His mother says she doesnt care and prepares the table.
Ice Box Episode 5.03 9-1-1 and 4-1-1 (1/30/2008) Edward is still in jail. Elizabeth is at work at the police station. Edwards family is carrying on their daily lives. Jamie is at school. It is lunch time and he sneaks away to the bathroom. He takes his cell phone out of his pocket. He calls Elizabeths house. He is told that she is at work. He doesnt ask for the stations number and hangs up. He thinks about what the stations number is, but he cannot remember. He decides to call 9-1-1. He holds the phone up to his ear. The operator comes on the line and says, 9-1-1, whats your emergency? Jamie is quick to react, Is this the police station? The operator says that she could transfer his call. He tells her that needs to talk to a police officer. Well, why dont you just tell me what your problem is and I can relay the message, Im going to need you to stay on the line with me. Jamie becomes frustrated as the lunch period is almost over. Can you just tell me the number for the police station, please? he asks. The operator repeats herself. Jamie becomes angry and raises his voice a little, Listen, there is no emergency, I just need a phone number. I called 9-1-1 because I thought you would be able to give me the number quickly, but this is turning into a headache. Im trying to return a call from a police officer. The operator on the other end pauses then asks, How old are you? Jamie quickly hangs up the phone. Back at the police station Elizabeth is still at the front desk. The newspaper reporter comes into the station. Elizabeth asks her if there is anything she can do for the reporter. The Kane Republican reporter explains to Elizabeth that she is here to interview the chief. She points to the door and says she can go in. The reporter leaves Elizabeth. Elizabeth leaves the desk for a moment while the chief is distracted with his interview. She goes into a back room to find the evidence on Edward. She finds a box with his name on it and takes it off a high shelf. She peaks inside, hoping to find the video. Thats funny, she says, the video isnt in here. She puts the box back on the shelf and then goes back to the desk. She must listen to the chief brag about what a great job hes doing to help keep the streets of Kane safe. Jamie who is back at school is in a study hall now. He asks to go to the bathroom. He needs to get in contact with Elizabeth. He gets to the door and walks in. He sits in a stall and calls 4-1-1 this time. He requests the number for the police station in town. He finally gets the number and makes a call. Elizabeth answers the phone and he recognizes her voice. Elizabeth, this is Jamie, Edwards brother. Listen, I dont have a lot of time because Im in school. I am curious as to what king of information you needed about our family, Jamie says quickly. Elizabeth is excited then calms down in case of getting the chiefs attention. She turns her head away from the door so the sound of her voice doesnt travel right into the other room. I need a family tree, starting with your grandparents and going down to your second cousins. Ill need this as soon as possible. Jamie takes this all in and then asks, What good is a family tree going to do to prove that Edward is innocent? Elizabeth says that she will explain everything later. Jamie leaves the bathroom and puts his cell phone away. Suddenly a mans voice from behind him is heard, Jamie, I need to see you in my office at the end of the day. Jamie turns around and sees the principal. Jamie nods and says that he will be down to his office at the end of the day. Jamie returns to class and is worried about why he has to go see the principal. Edward sits in his cell. The next few days will be full of surprises thanks to the Kane Republican. Hopefully Jamie can get the family tree to Elizabeth before it may be too late.
Ice Box Episode 5.04 All In The Family (2/01/2008) At the high school the afternoon announcements are heard. Jamie is to report to the principals office. He packs his things up and hurries to the office. He walks into the principals office. Jamie, sit down, the principal says, I had a few questions to ask you. Jamie sits in a chair and is a little worried. I was meaning to ask you about something that happened today. There was something that happened during your lunch time. Can you tell me what you did during lunch today? Jamie sits there and begins his story, thinking the principal knows about his call to 9-1-1 he made earlier. I went to lunch and began to eat. Then I went to the bathroom, he says. The principal looks at him with concerned eyes, What time did you go to the bathroom exactly? Jamie thinks about the question then answers, I went at about 12:45. What is this about, anyway? he asks. The principal looks at him and sighs, Listen, I know youre a great student and Im glad to have you here in the high school, but there was a problem at lunch. There was a fight and I needed some answers, but you cant give them to me because you werent in the cafeteria during the fight. You were in the bathroom. I wanted to hear your side of the story because I trust you. Youre a good kid. Jamie after hearing all of this is so relieved. The next day the Kane Republican, the towns newspaper, is published. Inside are details about Edward trial next week. Also is the interview with the police chief. It states how the chief is so relieved and proud to catch the person responsible for the crimes that happened over the past few months. He had the video tape during the interview and expressed that it is the proof that Edward is guilty. It says that his punishment will be a maximum of 2 years in jail or a hefty fine. Edward begins to read the article while in his cell. He is furious. He feels powerless about this whole ordeal. Elizabeth is finishing her shift at the police station and leaves to see Jamie at Texas Hots, a popular local restaurant. Jamie is late to arrive. Elizabeth waves him over. He sits down with a big binder in his hands. Inside is exactly what Elizabeth told him to do. A waitress comes over and offers to take their orders. Jamie says he doesnt want anything, but after Elizabeth says shell pay for the meal he orders some chicken fingers and fries. After the waitress leaves they begin looking for what Elizabeth needs. They flip through pages and pages of recent family. On almost each page there is a picture of a family member and any information about them such as addresses, careers, parents, etc. Elizabeth is shocked about how much detail Jamie has put into this in only two days. Elizabeth comes to a page without a photo. It reads, Cousin: Myles Michael Montgomery, Date of Birth: April 22, 1984, College: Clarion University Graduated: N/A. Elizabeth asks, Jamie do you have a photo of Myles? Jamie looks at her and says that he could try and find one at home tonight then call her and let her know. She also asks him what he knows about Myles. Jamie answers with what seems to be a helpless answer, I dont really know much about him. I might have seen him once or twice when we get the family together. Hes the same age as Edward. He went to college about 4 years ago and no one has heard from him in a long time. He sort of disowned the family, although I dont know why. If you want I can try and get some answers from my mom, if youd like. Elizabeth looks at Jamie with interest and then speaks, Yes that would be wonderful. This information is important although, it might not be what Im looking for. Elizabeth asks if she may take the page of interest with her to make a copy. Jamie lets her and then leaves and takes the binder with him. Elizabeth finishes her coffee. She looks at the time; she sees it is getting late. She packs up her notes and then goes home to sleep. Her next task while Jamie is looking for information on Myles is to get another look at that video in the police station. There might be something worthwhile there. Edward is sitting on his bed. He is staring at the copy of the Kane Republican that is haunting him. He decides to lie down. He begins to dream. A vision of the crowd enjoying his music puts a small smile on his face as he dreams. Suddenly the smile disappears. He begins to dream of the police running up to him and putting those cold metal handcuffs on him. He shakes awake. He sees a person in a dark hooded sweatshirt in the cell with him. He doesnt remember being told he had a visitor and looks at this person whose face is hidden by the hood. Suddenly the person lifts his head and removes the hood. The person is the same person that looks exactly like Edward. This time he shakes awake for real.
Ice Box Episode 5.05 Mysterious Myles (2/04/2008) Jamie is at home and tries to think of a way to get some information on Myles. He thinks about calling his aunt, but it would seem weird just calling out of the blue. Instead he takes a look at the binder and makes another copy of Myles page. He adds it to the binder and then walks down the stairs to his mother who is with the family pet, Shelby, a black lab mix watching the television. Mom, can I bother you for a minute? he asks her. His mother looks at him with a smile and tells him to have a seat next to her. What do you need? she asks in return. He looks at her and says that he is doing a project for school, a family tree. He also says that he needs more information on a few of his relatives closest to his age. He turns to a second cousin at first to seem like hes honestly looking for information. After his mother explains some things about this family member; he turns the page to Myles history. Jamies mother has a worried look on her face. Elizabeth is at home scanning her copy of the Myles page into her computer to print out. It is getting rather late and she picks up her schedule for work. Her schedule sheet posts everyones time to work, including the chiefs. She is due for work in about 9 hours. The chief is not working now and she decides that now is the perfect time to check out some evidence to help prove her hypothesis of Edwards innocence. She gets into her car and goes to the police station. The officer at the desk is busy with paper work. She makes idle chit-chat with him. She gets straight to the point soon after. I was wondering if you could do me a favor. The chief wanted me to do some homework tonight to gain some experience with evidence and looking for clues. He said it would help me become a better officer like himself. To be completely honest, I believe he used your name as an example of a great officer also, she says lying through her teeth. The officer at the desk looks at her and smiles, then he says, He really said that? Thats awesome. Which case of evidence did you need? Elizabeth looks at him with a smile. I need the Crawfords video. Since I was close friends with him before he went bad to the bone, the chief wants me to pin-point things out to him to nail Edward, she says. He takes a momentary pause and then heads back to get the video. Once Elizabeth has the tape she heads back into her car to take the video home. Edward is up all night in his cell. His dream earlier has scared him. He thinks about pleading temporary insanity. He doesnt remember going into someone elses home and taking things that doesnt belong to him. Perhaps this other person he is seeing that looks like him is a part of his hidden memory. It is really late before Edward goes to sleep. Jamie has asked his mother about Myles. His mother tells him that he is in for a long story. She begins to tell him, Myles was always a mysterious member of the family. No one knows what he is doing now-a-days, but last time anyone has heard from him was his plans to go to college in Clarion. He always liked to cause trouble with Edward. Those two were born only six months apart and spent a lot of time together when they were younger. Once while they were in middle school Myles tried to make Edward into a fool saying a girl liked him. Edward thought Myles was his friend and asked the girl to a dance. To Myles surprise the girl accepted and the two went to the dance together. This left Myles completely upset and angry. Myles made a plan to spread gossip about Edward and the other girl to try and split them up. Edward and this other girl started dating before the dance. The two got very close. Myles stated that the two were having sexual relations and soon it began to snowball into Edward having diseases and such. This gossip got back to her parents and they demanded that the two stop seeing each other right before the dance. The night of the dance Edward stayed home while Myles wanted to work more on his plan. Myles went to the dance and ended up dating this girl a few days after. Edward was crushed. After that school year Myles parents decided to move away from Kane. This caused the two to break up and Myles became a problem child. He was unruly. He began to talk back to his parents and disobey them at all costs. After he graduated from high school they kicked him out of their house. Myles was then forced to live on his own. He left a note to his parents saying he was going to college and to be successful without the help of his parents. After hearing about Edwards success after high school Myles became even more determined to become a star. He wrote his parents again after his first year of college to tell them he took out student loans and moved to California. Thats the last anyone heard from him. Jamie writes a summary of the story to give to Elizabeth. He tells his mother good night and goes upstairs to type up what he knows.
Ice Box Episode 5.06 No Answer (2/07/2008) Jamie sits upstairs typing up his report on Myles to give to Elizabeth. He finishes the story and then e-mails it to Elizabeth. Elizabeth is in her room watching the video, looking for something to prove Edward is innocent. During the video of Edward walking away down the driveway of one of the victims house, Elizabeths MSN messenger program alerts her of a new e-mail. She pauses the tape and reads the story of Myles and Edwards past. She recalls a little about this story having been in the same grade as Edward, but never knew about Myles who was in the grade before him. She only remembers that he kept to himself usually. She turns back to the video and notices something strange on Edwards left leg. She is shocked and has found one piece of evidence that the burglar is not Edward! Jamie goes to school the next day leaving his family tree binder at home. His mother is doing laundry. She picks up Jamies dirty clothes and making sure to comment to herself about how dirty his room is. She picks up a t-shirt and sees the binder that was lying under it. She wonders if he will need it for class today. She finishes packing up the laundry and places the binder on the top of the basket full of clothes. On her way to the laundry room, she puts the binder on the kitchen table. She proceeds to the laundry room to start a load of laundry. After getting the load started in the washer, she decides to take the binder to the school. She goes into the office and Jamie is at lunch. The secretary tells her she can go to the cafeteria if she wants to give it to him or she can leave it in the office. She decides to take it herself. While she was in the office Jamie goes to the bathroom. He takes out his cell phone to give Elizabeth a call to check up on things. His mother walks into the cafeteria, but she doesnt see him. She does see his friends all sitting at the same table and assumes that he is sitting with them. She explains that she has his family tree project and asks if someone would make sure that he gets it. One of his friends asks why he has a family tree project when no one else is doing one. She says that its for one of his classes. Another of his friends states that they are in all of the same classes except for concert band and doesnt recall any assignment dealing with a family tree. His mother seems puzzled and decides to leave. Jamie comes back from the bathroom to notice his binder sitting on the table. He realizes his mom was there. He questions his friends about what they talked about. His friends fill him in and expects to be questioned when he gets home from school. Edward is finally meeting with his lawyers at the prison early in the morning. They tell him that it might be best to plea bargain with the D.A. Edward contemplates their advice. He is unsure if he actually did do these deeds or not. He doesnt trust his own mind enough to make a decision. They continue to tell him there is a video of Edward walking into a house that was burglarized and then it shows him leaving the house with a small bag of items. Edwards mind is going crazy. He requests that he be left alone to think things through. The lawyers leave, but before they do, they remind him that he has less than three days until he must appear in court. Edward goes back to his cell. He thinks about calling Elizabeth to see what her legal advice will be. Finally he gets the chance to talk to a guard and asks to make a phone call. He calls Elizabeths cell phone, but there is no answer. Elizabeth has returned the tape before 5 AM so the chief doesnt know she took the tape without his permission. She is due to work in a few hours and hasnt slept at all. She doesnt look so good and tells the officer at the desk that she doesnt think shell be coming in today. The officer makes a note for the chief. Ill have him call you later. Ill let him know you came in and you dont look so good. Elizabeth is exhausted. She goes home to sleep for a few hours. While she is sleeping her phone rings. She doesnt look at it and hits a button to silence it. She has ignored Edwards phone call, thinking it was the chief.
Ice Box Episode 5.07 Thinking (2/12/2008) Jamie finishes his day at school and rides the bus home. He is worried and tries to think up a reason for having made the family tree binder. He doesnt want his mom to know that he made it to help Edward out. Although his mother doesnt care that hed be helping Edward, she sees it as something to take the focus off of school. He thinks of it as an extra assignment given to him by one of his teachers. Then he thinks that his mother will ask which teacher and maybe call the school. He thinks more about this as he walks home from the bus stop. Edward is in the recreation room in the prison. He is jump roping trying to get some exercise. He stops jumping and hangs the rope back on a hook. He then goes over to a treadmill to walk some while watching the television in the corner. He thinks about the walks Elizabeth hes enjoyed. He begins to miss them and thinks that if he is convicted and found guilty then Elizabeth would not want to talk to him again. He is then taken to his cell. He sits on his bed to think. Am I really going crazy? I swear I couldnt have done those things. I have to be innocent. I should be innocent. If I dont accept the plea bargain and Im found guilty I could be in more trouble than what I am already in. I wish Elizabeth would have answered my call. I hate feeling blind. I cant see my future. He wonders if thats why Elizabeth didnt answer his call. He lies down on his bed wishing this was all just a bad dream. Elizabeth is just waking up and taking a shower. As she is drying her hair her cell phone rings. This time it is the chief. She answers and hears the chiefs voice, Elizabeth, how are you feeling? I hope better because I need you to come in as soon as you can. Elizabeth sighs under her breath and then says, Sure, Ill be in as soon as I can. She hurries to get ready and then goes into the police station. Jamie gets home and is confronted at the door by his mother. She opens the door and tells him to take his jacket off and have a seat in the living room. Jamie smiles at her as if nothing is wrong. She tells him to open his backpack. He does so and she picks it up to remove the family tree binder. She holds it in one hand and asks him, What is this? Trying to make a joke out of the situation, Mom, we had this discussion the other night, its my project. She responds, A project for what? He looks at her and jokes about her being old. Jamie this is no time for jokes, I want to know what this is for, she says as she sits next to him. Jamie tells her that it is a family tree project that a teacher assigned him. She jumps up and tosses the binder to the floor. I went to the school and the secretary told me that there was no family tree project and I know youre lying to me, she raises her voice. Listen, mom, I got this project as something to challenge me. My social studies teacher gave me this assignment to challenge me because Im doing extremely well in his class. He didnt want anyone finding out about it because some of the other parents might become jealous of it. He also though it might expand my creative side and help me to explore my own personal past. Are you okay with that? If not, I can take this in and tell him I cant do it anymore, Jamie says as he lies through his teeth. His mother believes him, Alright, but next time I would like a letter explaining things to me. Elizabeth is at the station. The chief sees her and calls her into his office. Have a seat, Elizabeth, he says as he sits behind his desk. The Crawford case is coming up soon. I want you to be there to witness Edward getting what he deserves. Now, I know you were best friends with him, but justice knows no favorites. No name is above the law. Even we are subject to the laws of this land. Make sure you understand that. This trial will serve as a great start for you to learn that. You might even want to distance yourself from him, make no contact what-so-ever, because the moment you slip up, it will be there to haunt you later. Elizabeth takes this in and nods her head, not believing for a minute she can turn her back on her friend, Edward.
Ice Box Episode 5.08 Evaluations of Things (2/22/2008) The Kane Republican newspaper is published with headlines of information on Edwards case. The court case is tomorrow and it explains about the plea bargain. It states that no one has been given information about his plea and it speculates that Edward hasnt made up his mind yet. Elizabeth reads the article and folds the paper down on her computer desk at home. It is early Thursday night and she has to go to Smethport in the morning for the trial. The chief has told her to go in hopes of learning a lesson. What she alone knows is that he is innocent. Edward had a tattoo on his left calf until a few years ago. While she was watching the video tape the tattoo was still there. She hopes she can come up with something more than a tattoo for evidence. She calls up Jamie to see if he has any more information for her. She wants to know what happened while Myles went to California. Jamie tells her that he does too. It is a big mystery to the family and to them. Only one person knows what happened and his name is Myles Montgomery. Edward sits in his jail cell. He is writing a letter to Elizabeth and another one to his family. He reads his letter out loud to make sure it makes sense, This is a very hard letter to write. Ive had to do some thinking while Ive been away. Ive had to think about what I might have done to the residents of Kane. I cant honestly say that I didnt do those things. Im not sure of the events of my life, because I feel like Ive gone crazy. Before the concert two months ago, I felt like I was crazy. I had been seeing someone that looks exactly like me. This person never talked to me and I never talked to this person. I dont even know if this person is real. Perhaps Im developing a split personality and this other personality is at fault. I guess Ill have to take responsibility for this other personality. I have to try and make right from what is wrong. With that said Im taking the plea bargain set by the DA. I understand if you dont want to talk to me or visit me while Ill be calling the prison my home. Ill just try and make the best of everything now. Love, Edward. He seals the envelops and writes the addresses down on each. Tears begin to fill his eyes. Myles is in a dark room next to a computer. He pulls up the Kane Republican website hoping to read about Edward. The page loads and he is happy to see the court date is set for tomorrow. He calls his friend Irwin over to the screen. Take a look at this! Edward hasnt made up his mind for a plea yet, but there is no way he can get out of this one, he excitedly explains to his friend. Well be off the hook for sure! his friend exclaims. Irwin continues, I love how were getting rid of that disgusting Edward. Hell be in jail for at least two years. With him out of the way you could become famous. Do you have any plans on how youre going to do this? he asks. Myles looks at him with a disappointed face. Of course I have a plan you fool. Ill have to go back to California to get my old face back. Ive always wanted to become an actor. An actors life is so much better than a recording artist. Maybe Ill start off in the soaps, then move into either prime time or the movies! I cant wait. Im going to be big. To top this all off, the icing on the cake will be having Edward stuck in jail, he says. Irwin nods and continues to listen, The sooner I can get out of this face, the better. Irwin looks at Myles and comments, I kind of like your face. Its kind of cute. Myles pushes Irwin away and continues to read the article online. It is beginning to get later into the evening. Jamie is sitting with his mother and Shelby the family dog in the living room. Jamie looks to his mom as he pets Shelby. Mom, Jamie says trying to get her attention, do you still love Edward? His mother looks at him with a half smile. Jamie, this is hard for me to explain to you. I love my boys. Edward has done some things Im not proud of and at times it may seem like I dont. I am upset with him, she answers. Jamie continues to pet Shelby then continues to question his mom about loving Edward. Why are you upset with Edward? he asks. She tilts her head to one side and answers, Well, when youre a parent and your children leave home for good you may understand this better. You want them to leave the nest ready to make the right decisions, ready to take on the world. Thats only on one hand, on the other hand you want them to come back and spend some time with you. Edward hasnt done that. We dont talk. We dont know whats going on in each others lives. Jamie interrupts his mother, Of course you know whats going on in his life, hes in jail for robbing the town. You knew that mom. His mother looks at him, Of course I know that. Its just that he hasnt always been in jail. He could have stopped by before all this, but he didnt. Jamie looks at his mother and says, You know what, maybe its time you had a little chat with Edward. I think, maybe you should fix things.
Ice Box Episode 5.09 Todays Choices (3/03/2008) Today is the court case to decide Edwards fate. He has yet to make his plea public which has caused distress with Elizabeth and his family. Today is a Friday and Jamie goes to school early in the morning. His mother has decided to send Jamie to school, and then take him out later in the morning to go to Smethport. Over in Highland Township, Elizabeth is getting ready to go to the courthouse. She begins her journey. She hopes to get the chance to see Edward before the hearing so she can convince him to make his plea not guilty. Myles is just waking up and gets a shower. He nudges Irwin to wake him up. Come on, todays the big day! Get your ass up and get showered already. We have to get going soon. We dont want to miss the big news of Edward going to jail for a few more years. Irwin looks at him as if he doesnt care and would rather go back to sleep. Finally Myles takes the blankets off the bed and watched Irwin wriggle in bed to try and stay warm. He decides it is no use and gets up to get a shower. Finally, Myles says, its about time. In Smethport Edward is preparing his speech about his plea. He believes that his case is complicated so he asked his lawyers to talk to the judge to give Edward a quick speech about his plea. He wants to make clear that he doesnt remember the crimes, nor does he feel like hes been mentally well in the recent past. Finally a guard comes to take him to the courthouse. Edward puts on his cuffs and walks down the hallway thinking that this place will be his home for the next few years. He finally enters the courthouse into a holding room for prisoners. He takes a seat on the metal chair. Everyone piles into the courtroom. Elizabeth, Jamie, Edwards mother, and Irwin is there inside the courtroom already. Myles waits in the car nearby. Irwin takes his cell phone out of his jacket and text messages Myles, He isnt here yet. I think were early. Myles text messages him back, Well, just keep me posted as to whats going on, alright? Irwin sends a text message back saying he will. Finally it is time and Edward is brought in from a side room. He looks around the packed courtroom. He feels very nervous. He sits at his seat with his mother, brother, and Elizabeth behind him. As soon as he sits down Elizabeth leans forward to speak to him. All rise, the honorable Judge Mifflin presiding, the bailiff announces across the room. Elizabeth is forced to be silent. She wanted to make sure he changed his mind about his plea before telling the packed room. Judge Mifflin sits and tells the courtroom to do the same. He begins by announcing the case and then talks to the jury about their important decision in the matter. Edward looks at the jury with worried eyes. He assumes that once he gives the plea they will have to decide on a punishment. He is sure that the punishment will not be as light as a fine, because he is a celebrity. Behind Edward, Elizabeth is biting her nails. She is extremely anxious and nervous. If Edward pleas guilty the case will be closed and the only thing left will be the sentencing. She thinks about when she could speak up and help save Edward from making a horrible decision. Just then the judge looks at Edward and asks for his plea and announces that Edward has asked to speak explaining his plea. Edward, you may begin when ready, the judge says. Edward looks up and stands; he then clears his throat. Ladies and gentlemen, I have been accused of a crime against my hometown of Kane, Pennsylvania. This town has been in my heart for many years, even when I wasnt home. Now I have become an enemy to many of the townsfolk there. I dont understand how I could be the one to have done these crimes and hurt my town, Edward states. Irwin sits in the back and texts Myles, He sounds like hes going to plea not guilty! Edward continues, However, recently I have been feeling mentally ill. Before Kane Fest I had seen someone that looked exactly like me. I know this cannot be true, because I do not have a twin. Although I do not remember committing these crimes, I have decided to take the blame and take the DAs plea bargain. I plead guilty. When Edward finishes there is outbursts of conversation. Irwin quickly messages Myles about the news. Jamie and Elizabeth are furious and begin talking to each other. Mrs. Crawford, Edwards mother, sits silently, partially upset with her son.
Ice Box Episode 5.10 Are Tomorrows Future (3/05/2008) In the car near the courthouse, Myles gets the text message and is overjoyed. He quickly sends one back stating how happy the news makes him. Back in the courtroom Irwin receives the text. He quickly reads it, closes his phone, and then smiles looking up to see what else is going on. Edward folds the paper that was his quick speech and puts it down on the table. Judge Mifflin looks at Edward then speaks, The defendant has plead guilty on 34 counts of trespassing, robbery, and misdemeanors. He then looks at the jury, Ladies and gentlemen of the jury you must now agree on a sentence. You may deliberate and return in one weeks time to announce your decision. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and I thank you for upholding your civic duty. Court will reconvene next Friday for sentencing. He pounds his gavel and adjourns the courtroom. The judge leaves back to his office, while Edward is taken away back to his jail cell. Elizabeth is furious. She explains to Jamie to go visit Edward and try and talk to him. She plans on talking to Judge Mifflin about the circumstances. Jamie and his mother leave to visit Edward and Elizabeth goes to Judge Mifflins office. Irwin joins an excited Myles in the car. Irwin arrives at the car to a smiling Myles. Our plan of making Edward think hes crazy and blaming him for the robberies has worked! Theres no escape for him now! Hell spend his time in jail and Ill be free of him for the next few years! This feels so good, Myles exclaims. Irwin looks at Myles then asks, So now what? Myles answers him still excited, Next stop California and my acting career. Of course Ill need my very talented make-up artist with me to jump start his career as well. Irwins face becomes full of expression. As Myles continues to talk about his plans Irwin sits in the car day dreaming about becoming a famous make-up artist for Hollywood. The two journey back to Kane in order to get their plans in order. Edward sits in his jail cell on the bed. His head is hung low and it appears that he is very depressed. Soon a guard comes to let Edward know he has visitors. Edward raises his head and tells the guard he is not interested. The guard tells him that the guests, a young man and an older lady, say it is important. He assumes that it is his brother and mother. He gets up and sighs. He joins them in the visitors lounge. Mrs. Crawford looks saddened while Jamie has a serious look on his face. Edward sits down and Jamie speaks to him, Why did you plead guilty if you didnt do those crimes? Edward explains to him that he isnt sure if he did the crimes or not, and since there is a video that shows him in the process of robbing a home, he decided to plead guilty. Jamie fills Edward in on the information Elizabeth has. You know the video you mentioned, well; its not you in the tape. Elizabeth watched the video and can prove it is not you. She said something about a tattoo on your calf, he states. Edward is confused, I dont have a tattoo on my calf anymore; I had one a few years ago. Are you talking about the G on my leg? I had that removed about two years ago. I dont know of anyone else that would have one. Jamie looks at him with a duh face, Of course you dont have the tattoo anymore. The person in the video did! Dont you understand? You werent the one who did all this! Someone who looks like you did this. The problem is that we dont know who looks like you and would have a tattoo that you had. Edward speaks, So, if I didnt do all this and I plead guilty, that means Im taking the blame for something I didnt do and am letting whoever did off scot-free? With a smart remark Jamie answers, Isnt that nice of you? Edward puts his head down on the table and sighs. Elizabeth arrives at Judge Mifflins office and knocks. Come in, a voice says on the other side of the door. Elizabeth opens the door to see the judge loosening his tie. Hello, Judge Mifflin, Im Elizabeth Blair. Im a police officer from Kane. I have some information on the Crawford case that you might want to know about. I remember reading in the paper that you like to punish the ones responsible for their crimes and are against those that are innocent to take the blame. What if I said Edward was framed? Elizabeth announces to a fascinated judge. This is very serious. What proof do you have that he was framed? More importantly, why is he taking the blame for something that he didnt do? the judge asks. If you have the time, I can explain almost everything, Elizabeth says as she is motioned to sit down. Elizabeth sits down in a chair across the judges desk ready to prove Edwards innocence.
Ice Box Episode 5.11 One Step Forward, Two Steps Back (3/8/2008) Edward is innocent because of the video tape that announced that he was responsible for the crimes. I watched the tape and noticed something unusual. On the suspects calf there is a tattoo, the same tattoo Edward had. However, Edward had the tattoo removed two years ago. That should explain Edwards innocence, however, I have yet to understand why the person in the tape looks so much like Edward, Elizabeth explains to Judge Mifflin. As Judge Mifflin listens he writes down a few questions so he remembers to ask. This tattoo could have been fake, a drawing. My teenager at home draws on himself with a permanent marker all the time. Perhaps Edward drew it back on for some reason. If Edward didnt commit these robberies maybe his evil twin did it, the judge jokes around and is unconvinced about this story. Elizabeth becomes a little angry and explains, Edwards tattoo was red, not black. The video was in black and white, how would you know what color the tattoo was in the video? the judge asks. I went and bought a camera, same make and model, that was used to catch this act. I put a paint card that is the color of Edwards tattoo next to a black paint card. This black is the color most tattoo studios use. As you can clearly see, there is a difference in darkness. The red is lighter than the black, Elizabeth continues. Well all be, says the judge, Why didnt his lawyers work on a case for him? We have a man in jail for something he didnt do. Well, wait a minute. Theres one thing that bothers me; what about the similarity of this man in the video and Mr. Crawford? Elizabeth shrugs her shoulders then proposes her theory, I dont know, but this is what I came up with. I have thought of this for a while now and came up with only one explanation. Edwards cousin, Myles Montgomery, was jealous of Edwards fame. He hasnt been around and no one has heard from him in a few years since he supposedly went to California. What if he came back to frame Edward, forcing him into jail in order to finally have his revenge? Once again Judge, this is just a theory. I cant back any of this up. All I know if that the wrong man is sitting in jail for these crimes. Edward doesnt know much of what I told you today, I suggest you talk to him about Myles and his plea. Judge Mifflin looks at Elizabeth and says, Wow, what a story. As if it couldnt get any more confusing. Ill speak with him later in the day. Thank you Elizabeth, because there are people out there working hard like you, Im sure well get the person responsible. Elizabeth leaves as the judge rubs his balding head. Edward is still visiting with his family. Jamie has explained that Edward is innocent and should not have pleaded guilty. Edward looks at his mother. I know this isnt going to mean much coming from an ungrateful son, but thank you for being here today. It means a lot, Edward says to his mother. His mother looks at Edward and shakes her head from side to side, Edward, youve been with me since the day you were born. Maybe not physically, but mentally and spiritually you were always right here. As she says this, she points to her heart. She continues, Ive thought about you everyday. Ive worried about whether you were making the right decisions, right friends, hell, Ive also worried about getting some grandchildren, but that can wait. What I need now is for you to come home to us. I didnt realize how close you were, although you werent living at home, now youre farther away. Come home to us, please. She begins to tear up. She gets a tissue out of her purse. We have to go now, but you make sure you get out of here and come home, she demands through a cracking voice. Edward begins to tear up as well and motions for a hug. For the first time in about five years the two share a hug. Saturday afternoon comes and there is big news in the Kane Republican. The newspaper has reported about the court case and the surprising events that followed. They interviewed Judge Mifflin and he had explained that he talked to a police officer about the case. After talking to the officer, he discussed the information with Edward Crawford. Edward has changed his plea and next Friday the trial will commence. Judge Mifflin had said evidence has surfaced to guarantee Edwards freedom, but because he must have a trial Edward will remain in jail until then. He does not specify what evidence it is, but states that Edward will be free by next week. Myles reads this article online and is furious! He calls Irwin over. I think well need to make a surprise visit to Judge Mifflin tomorrow night, Myles tells Irwin, Get some ski masks, a baseball bat, and leather gloves.
Ice Box Episode 5.12 In God We Trust (3/17/2008) Sunday comes and Judge Mifflin is in church with his family. The church is located in a remote area with grassy fields surrounding the area for miles. There is no presence of humans except for a car pulling into the parking lot slowly. The car stops and two men in ski masks and gloves get out of the car carrying baseball bats. The car is still running. The two men are Myles and Irwin. Myles lifts the driver side wiper and places a typed note on the windshield and lowers the wiper. Lets get this over with, Myles says to Irwin. Suddenly Irwin and Myles smash the cars headlights, taillights, and windows. They also dent the doors and hood of the car. Quickly they finish and get away before anyone inside the church comes outside. Inside the church the congregation sings hymns as the organ plays loudly covering any noise happening outside. Soon the congregation is dismissed from the church. As members of the church come out they gasp in horror. Finally Judge Mifflin, his wife, and his two daughters in their late 20s come out to see what has been done to their car. Elizabeth is busy getting the evidence ready for the court case on Friday, hopefully to free Edward from prison. She has the camera ready, paint cards, and recent pictures of Edward. With everything together she hops into the shower to get ready for work. Shes in for a long day of police work. She finally gets into her car and arrives at the police station. As soon as she arrives the police chief calls her into his office angrily and tells her to close the door behind her. She walks into his office and then shuts the door, not sure what to expect. Jamie is just leaving church and is heading home. He meets with some of his friends at Texas Hots, a popular local restaurant. The topic of conversation is Edward and the case coming up on Friday. Jamie explains to his friends that he wont be able to hang out on Friday because he and his mom are organizing a small welcome home party at the Kane Manor. He explains to them that Edward will be a free man and theres nothing anyone can do about it. I cant wait to tell Edward everything thats been going on. It feels like forever ago that hes been in jail, Jamie says. One of his friends asks how he can be so sure that Edward will be free on Friday. Jamie leans towards them and says, Youll just have to be there when everything goes down. All of his friends beg him to let them in on the secret. Jamie doesnt. Judge Mifflin notices a note on the windshield and picks it up. He begins to read it out loud, If you know whats good for you and your family, Edward Crawford will not be a free man! He looks around the congregation. He asks one of his daughters to dial 9-1-1. While she is talking on the phone, he looks over the car. He and his family are astounded that something like this has happened. He inspects the under carriage and notices no gas, or other fluids, leaking from the car. He stands up and sighs. What am I to do, he says under his breath as he puts the note in his pocket hidden from his family. Elizabeth is in the police chiefs office. Have a seat. You are making trouble for me and the rest of the department. I cant believe you have the audacity to go behind my back and do something like this. Edward was put into custody and should have pleaded guilty. This hurts the reputation of the station and more importantly, myself. You have made the town think the police department is incapable of catching a simple house robber. In fact, you made it seem that we catch innocent people just so we can have someone pay for the crime. You are so lucky that I dont fire you. But if you cost me the election for mayor, so help me, he scolds her. He points to huge pile of folders on his desk and tells her, File these then come back to me, I have a lot of house cleaning to do. Correction, I have house cleaning for you to do. I hope you brought your cleaning gloves today. Edward has a long lonely week left in jail. He has a tablet and a pen. He thinks back to an Eagles song called Teenage Crime. He begins to write the lyrics as best as he can remember, Stare out the window, You can't make the time go You don't even know why you're here Wait for the weekend to go off the deep end and make everything disappear You're lost in a teenage jail So you and so vicious and so frail where something is always for sale You're lost in a teenage jail. He begins to think about his love for music. Am I crazy? I want to sing about something other than marching band? God help me.
Ice Box Episode 5.13 On One Hand (3/26/2008) Monday afternoon arrives with news in the Kane Republican about the attack on Mifflins car. Elizabeth sits at home reading the paper. She is concerned as it states that the threats are about Edwards case. She tries to think about who would want Edward to stay in jail. Later she gets a phone call from the police chief. He asks her to come into work to get the information on Judge Mifflin. When she arrives at the station the chief sits her down in his office. I want you to investigate this a little further. Judge Mifflin has asked for you to go to his house and speak with him. It seems youre causing problems for everyone involved in this case. I hope youre happy, he says. Elizabeth leaves for Mifflins home immediately feeling disgust for the chief. Myles and Irwin take a look at the newspaper article online. Myles has mixed feelings over the news. On one hand hes happy Mifflin is concerned over presiding over the case. On the other hand Myles doesnt feel Mifflin has been scared enough into dropping the case. Irwin asks Myles what their next move will be. He looks at him and explains, Well have to sit and wait for a day or two, and see how this progresses. Irwin nods his head in understanding. Myles looks at him and then continues, We should have something planned just in case Mifflin decides not to listen. Edward is once again in his cell at the prison. He has a small pile of paper standing next to him. On the floor are pieces of paper crumpled into balls. He is continuing to recall lyrics to songs and then writing his own version of them. One of the prisoners in another cell was given a radio. The radio begins to play a recently new song called These Words by Natasha Bedingfield. He enjoys the beat of the song and the lyrics. He relates to the hardship of creating a song. He hears bits and pieces of the song because of the noise outside of his cell. He strains to hear, I tried to focus my attention, but I feel so A.D.D. I need some help, some inspiration, but its not coming easily. Trying to find the magic, trying to write a classic. Don't you know, don't you know, don't you know? Waste-bin full of paper. Clever rhymes, see you later I know I had some studio time booked, but I couldn't find a killer hook. Now you've gone and raised the bar right up. Nothing I write is ever good enough. Elizabeth arrives at Judge Mifflins house. She knocks on the door. His wife answers the door and lets Elizabeth in. She leads her to the family room. Elizabeth has a seat while Mifflins wife asks her if she would like something to drink. Elizabeth asks if she could have some water. Soon Elizabeth gets her water and looks around as she is left to wait. Judge Mifflin comes into the room. He sits across from her and begins the conversation, So youve heard I wanted to speak with you. The Crawford case is giving me trouble. After church I was surprised to find this. He shows her pictures of his car. Elizabeth is surprised to see the damage. He continues, And that isnt everything, I also found a note. It was more like a threat. Elizabeth asks him what the note said. If you know whats good for you and your family, Edward Crawford will not be a free man. he says. Its not positive, wouldnt you say? I needed to talk to you about this. This is a very serious matter. I have reason to believe that whoever has done this to my car wants me to change my mind about the trial, or at least exclude your evidence. This could be you in my shoes, youre rather lucky. If I had announced what the evidence was and who it was that brought it to my attention, just imagine, he continues. Elizabeth thinks about it and is relieved. Then she asks, What are you going to do about the threats then? Judge Mifflin lets out a sigh then begins to speak, Well, the way I see it is this. On one hand if I allow you to present your evidence and keep things the way they are, something will happen to either me, or my family. On the other hand, I could step down from presiding over the trial and the system will pick another judge. I doubt any other judge would let this kind of evidence be allowed. Without this evidence Edward would be put away for a few years. I wanted you over to ask what you would like me to do. Elizabeth looks at him with worried eyes, Like you said, on one hand Edward could come home to Kane at the end of the week or he could stay in jail for a few years. Id rather have him back, sir, but to put your family and yourself in danger isnt an honorable decision. This is difficult. The judge looks at her, Now you see my angle of things, I do my job, protect freedom to become a prisoner myself, or take someone elses freedom so I can be free. I dont know what to do.
Ice Box Episode 5.14 Finally Its Friday (4/18/2008 Season 5 Finale) Edward sleeps uneasy after hearing about the attacks on Judge Mifflins car and the threats towards his family. He tosses and turns all night. He dozes off into a deep sleep. Soon he begins to dream. His has a vision of a courtroom with a high bench for the judge as he is looked down on. All of a sudden the judge pounds the gavel on the bench to silence the talking in the courtroom. He announces that the jury has reached its verdict. Guilty! one of the members of the jury exclaim. The judge then asks the jury for the punishment. Life in prison! another member of the jury shouts. Edward looks in horror and disbelief. He looks around the room. His mother and brother are there. They begin to cry and then leave the courtroom without saying a word to Edward. Elizabeth is seen standing behind Edward. She speaks, I cant believe you did this. I never want to see you again! You disgust me, how could I have ever been friends with you? Edward is stunned. As Elizabeth leaves the courtroom the judge pounds the gavel again and orders the officers to put cuffs on Edward and take him away. As the officers do so the judge pounds the gavel even louder than before and exclaims, Case closed! As these words are mentioned Edward wakes up, startled to death. Earlier in the day Elizabeth and Judge Mifflin have decided on a plan of action. They had the tough decision to choose between Edwards freedom and Judge Mifflins imprisonment or Edwards imprisonment and Judge Mifflins freedom. The two have concluded that it would be best to keep Mifflin on the case, but announce he is going to have another judge take his place because of threats put against him and his family. Only a few members of the judicial system and law enforcement officers will know the truth. Judge Mifflin types up a statement to the Kane Republican to be published the following day. Elizabeth drops the statement off at the newspapers office. The rest of the week flies by for everyone except Edward Crawford who is worried and spends his time working out in the gym at the prison or in his cell. When he isnt working out, he is working on new songs about this experience. He hopes everything will work out for the best and hell be able to get back to business as usual. Finally it is Friday and Edward prepares to face the jury and the rest of the town. The courtroom is packed with citizens from Kane and the surrounding area. The Crawford family is sitting right behind Edward, and beside these two is Elizabeth. Jamie holds his mothers hand. Mrs. Crawford has her head down with her eyes closed praying for an innocent verdict. Everyone is seated and the bailiff calls order in the court. All rise, Judge Mifflin presiding over the case of Crawford vs. the people of McKean county. There are gasps heard as Judge Mifflin walks through the door and sits on his bench. He lets the courtroom sit and demands order. Mrs. Crawford possesses a relieved, happy smile while Edward is in complete shock. Elizabeth smiles and is ready to have her best friend back home. Myles listens to the car radio as the court case is broadcast over the local radio station. Irwin sits with him this time in the car as a precaution with added security over the case. Myles is furious once he hears that Judge Mifflin is presiding over the case. Youve got to be kidding me! He dares to disregard our threats! Well show him if he announces that Edward is a free man, Myles exclaims to Irwin. Irwin looks at Myles, Why do we care if hes proven innocent, why dont we cook up another plan to get him for good. This plan is only going to last a year or two. We need to rid the world of Edward Crawford. He has to pay for what hes done. Youve suffered your whole life living in Edwards shadow. Its time he lives in your shadow for the same amount of time. What do you say? Myles looks at Irwin in shock. Where did this mean side of you come from? I thought you couldnt think up anything sadistic, even if your life depended on it, Myles says. Irwin gives him a smile and tells him to take them home and when they get there they can plot a devilish scheme to get rid of Edward for longer than a few years. The two drive towards Kane continuing to listen to the case over the radio. In light of evidence that proves Edward Crawford is innocent of all the crimes put against him, we the jury find the defendant not guilty of multiple counts of robbery, trespassing, and misdemeanors in the county of McKean in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, one of the jurors announces to the courtroom. Edward is a free man to return home. When Edward returns home something evil will be waiting for him in the weeks and months to come.
