PROFILO DELL'UMBRIA...
Perhaps it is the evocative nature of the place, or a certain enchanted air (we might almost say "mystic") that you breathe to some extent everywhere, but sooner or later whoever visits Umbria ends up thinking: Saint Francis, that great, gentle, tender and poetic Saint of happiness and meekness could only have been born here in Umbria. In this place of ever-green, enchanted and radiant nature. In these towns the concept of "historic centre" seems inadequate and reductive, so widespread is the monumental and artistic component in the towns of Umbria. Perugia, for example, the regional capital. Just to describe it is to lose oneself in the richness, complexity and magnificence of its architectural and artistic treasures: from the Etruscan walls to the splendid Palazzo Gallenga, seat of the prestigious university for foreigners, and many other buildings and historic monuments that lead out from the central Piazza IV Novembre, itself dotted with architectural and artistic jewels such as the Great Fountain and the magnificent Palazzo dei Priori. The same is true for splendid Gubbio, rich with Franciscan memories and monuments from the medieval and renaissance eras. And then Todi, Spello, Spoleto, Orvieto, Città di Castello and many other small towns: all magnificently enriched by monuments, palaces and churches of high artistic merit. Even Terni, a modern industrial city, boasts jewels such as the churches of S. Salvatore and S. Francesco and, close by, the masterpiece of nature that is the Waterfall of Marmore. Finally Assisi, the town where Saint Francis was born (as was Saint Clare, founder of the Poor Clares), one of the best-known Christian destinations frequented by pilgrims. You have to see it for yourself.
Sarà la suggestione dei luoghi, sarà
un certa aria incantata (stavamo per dire "mistica") che si respira un
po' dovunque, ma prima o poi chi visita l'Umbria finisce col pensare: San
Francesco, il grande, soave, tenero, poetico santo della letizia e della
mansuetudine, non poteva che nascere qui, in Umbria. In questi luoghi dalla
natura sempre verde, incantata, radiosa. In queste città dove il concetto di
"centro storico" sembra inadeguato, riduttivo, tanta è diffusa nella
gran parte dei centri umbri la componente monumentale e artistica. Perugia, ad
esempio, il capoluogo della regione. Già a descriverla ci si smarrisce nella
ricchezza, complessità e magnificenza delle sue architetture e dei suoi tesori
d'arte: dalle mura etrusche allo splendido Palazzo Gallenga, sede della
prestigiosa università per stranieri, e ai tanti edifici e monumenti storici
che si dipartono dalla centrale Piazza IV Novembre, già di per sé costellata
di preziosità architettoniche e artistiche come la Fontana Maggiore, il
magnifico Palazzo dei Priori. E così è per la splendida Gubbio, ricca di
memorie francescane e di monumenti d'epoca medievale e rinascimentale. E poi
Todi, Spello, Spoleto (sede oltre che di antichi splendori, del prestigioso
Spoleto Festival), Orvieto, Città di Castello e tanti altri piccoli paesi:
tutti centri magnificamente impreziositi da monumenti, palazzi, chiese di
eccelsi pregi artistici. La stessa Terni, moderna città industriale, vanta
gioielli come le chiese di S. Salvatore e di S. Francesco e, nelle sue
vicinanze, un capolavoro della natura come la spettacolare Cascata delle Marmore.
Infine Assisi, la città natale di San Francesco (e di Santa Chiara, fondatrice
dell'ordine delle Clarisse), una delle mete cristiane più universalmente note e
frequentate dai pellegrini. Impossibile non visitarla di persona.
