WEST SAINT JOHN

West Saint John is served by the West Saint John Subdivision from Lancaster. It is a location of major port facilities. Included in the complex are BRUNTERM, a large rail-sea intermodal facility, the NHB export grain elevator, the FORTERM forest products export facility and the AUTOPORT. The nearby Lorneville industrial Park houses several other companies including the IRVING Oil Refinery, covered hopper reload center, and asphalt plant which use rail service extensively.

Intermodal and export grain trains bypass Dever Road Yard terminating and departing directly in West Saint John. The intermodal terminal is currently the railway's biggest customer. It is also the most efficient, requiring very few switching moves. A yard switcher is, however, usually kept at WSJ for local switching and transfer runs to the Dever Road Yard.

DEVER ROAD / LANCASTER

Dever Road is a neighbourhood on the western edge of Saint John and is the location of the Island Central Railway's Saint John Division major sorting yard. Lancaster is the Junction of the West Saint John Subdivision and the mainline near the eastern end of the yard. Other than the intermodal and export grain trains all ICR freight trains to and from Greater Saint John terminate or begin their runs at the Dever Road Yard.

A Yard crew is on duty twenty-four hours a day at this location. Switcher turns frequently transfer cars between Dever Road, Saint John (Mill Street), CN Interchange and West Saint John. Three tracks are in service between the eastern end of Dever Road Yard at Lancaster and Saint John (Mill Street) to enable the efficient movement of freight transfers, occasional passenger trains and frequent locomotive moves between the two.

Although DEVER ROAD and LANCASTER have many rail-side businesses with customer sidings, many of these are no longer in use. The loss of most of the "single box car " customers over the years has been more than made up for by the ever expanding forest industry use of rail and flourishing intermodal traffic.
