MARTINON / GRAND BAY/ WESTFIELD/ WELSFORD

Although Martinon is now a quiet suburban hamlet on the western edge of Saint John signs of past industrial activity can be found there near the railroad and Sutherland's spur. The rumour persists that the small Martinon lumber mill may be expanding soon. A few miles west of Martinon the Island Central passes through the much more lively suburb of Grand Bay which boasts its own retail downtown and status as the agricultural service center for the lower St. John River Valley. Railway customers receive numerous car loads of fertilizers and feeds each year through Grand Bay and a large Frozen Food plant here ships by both road and rail.

West of Grand Bay the railway mainline passes along the St. John River and through the quiet residential community of Westfield where a branch line diverges to follow the river to Gagetown. The River Road "Rail fan's bridge" crosses over the mainline just west of the junction here.

With a crossover at Ononette Bridge halfway along the Grand Bay/ Westfield passing siding, and the Gagetown branch leaving the mainline at Westfield, when trains get late and extras are out on the line, the dispatcher is occasionally faced with getting up to five trains by each other here. For the rail fan this is THE place to be at that moment.
From Westfield the railway follows the Nerepis River on a moderate but steady rising grade to the small hamlet of Welsford where it diverts to the Douglas Valley.
