We have been welcoming school groups to the Brass Rubbing Centre now for fifteen years and we think we must be  getting it right to judge by the wealth of letters we receive from satisfied teachers and their pupils, not to mention the recommendations that are passed on to other groups.

For a class of twenty to thirty students the procedure is this:  We usually split the group in two.  Group 1 come into the Centre and are given a brief  talk about the early engravers, pointing out design features on the brasses,  and looking at heraldry, costume, and other interesting facts about the subjects.  After a short demonstration, students are then able to make a rubbing, using our quality papers and waxes.  Friendly help is always on hand to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

Group 2 visit St. George's Church (which is adjacent to the Centre) with one of our guides and spend an interesting half an hour or more exploring the wonders of this fascinating building, culminating in a head hunt, identifying the many  gargoyle heads hidden throughout the church.  If there is time we will sometimes indulge in storytelling about some of the infamous characters who populated the area in bygone days.

The activity is then changed over so that everyone has an opportunity to experience all there is to see and do.

Most groups tell us that they mount an exhibition of their rubbings on their return to school, and they  frequently send us photos  of the event, showing us just how effective their visit has been.
