The  Village of Arreton

Nestling at the foot of the downs that dominate the Wight from Brading in the east to Newport in the centre, Arreton must be one of the most favoured areas of agricultural land in the whole of the country.

Its history predates the Norman Conquest with an ancient burial barrow on  the top of the Downs close to the Hare and Hounds public house, reputedly the oldest hostelry on the Island and down in the valley, the White Lion offers a welcome to travellers.

Ancient Manor Houses abound, from the gothic splendour of Arreton Manor with its Tudor chimneys and latticed windows, to the charming Hazeley Manor, which represents itself as the oldest house on the Island.

Sadly these houses are no longer open to the public but provide an interesting spectacle when walking the many footpaths that criss -cross the  landscape

For the walker you can take a stroll  through ancient woodlands close by Horringford (where there used to be an old steam railway station), in the direction of Sandown.  There you will discover a nature reserve, abundant with wildlife and flowers and winding streams, For the more energetic, there is the climb through cornfields behind St. George's Church, along the footpath  and over the stile up on to the very top of the Down where you are rewarded with a view of the sparkling waters of the Solent

Pick strawberries at the strawberry farm and catch a glimpse the house of the Dairyman's Daughter and if you want to find out more about her life and tragic death, the County Library Service will have a copy of  The Dairyman's Daughter by Legh Richmond.

Finally,  don't forget to include a visit to the Brass Rubbing centre when you come to Arreton for that special take home souvenir of your visit
