| David Eastman [???-???] It is suspected that the father of Joseph Ishtman Sr. was a hired mercenary from Germany and possibly a slave of Britton who was sent to America to fight for the Crown's interests in the United States. Some records indicate this Hessen Solder was captured by General George Washington during the Christman Eve raid crossing of the Patomic River. Some records indicate this solder may have been sent back to Britton as part of a prisoner exchange and then later returned to America on his own to settle in Pennsylvania. Other records seem to indicate that he was released before the prisoner exchange and opted to stay in America rather than return to Britton or Germany after the war. wed Mother (???) Eastman [???-???] on ??? There children are thought to be: David Ishtman [1800-???] (Notes to be added.) Moses Ishtman [1803-???] (Notes to be added.) Joseph Ishtman [Jan 1, 1807-Feb 3, 1882] Some records indicate that Joseph was from Schuylkill County PA, while others show him from Northumberland County. Said to be buried in Emerickville Luthern Cemetery. I have been to the Luthern Cemetery in Emerickville with Sam Ishman and stood where Joseph & Rebecca's grave site is said to be. The headstone that Sam Ishman and his wife found in the cemetery years earlier has come up missing. On Monday July 14th, 2008 Sam & I paid a visit to one of the care takers of this cemetery who met us out at the cemetery to help us locate the head stone. It could not be found there. The care taker could not find a lot map that could give us the exact location of the plot where Joseph & Rebecca were buried. Civil war records show a Joseph as a Private in the 211th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company B. Some suspect this may be Joe Junior. (Note: The Civil War era was from April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865. Joeseph Sr. would have been 54-58 years old during this time and Joe Jr. would have been 16-20 years old. Joseph was a common name in those days and also could have been the son of Moses Ishtman) |

| This unmarked grave between Smith and Zimmerman is where Joseph and Rebecca Ishtman are said to be buried. The fifth headstone at the top of this picture from the right, which also lines up with the left edge of the Zimmerman headstone (shown enlarged below), is the Perry & Ella Ishman grave site. | |||||
