LGU
supports Mindanao Week of Peace
Recognizing that peace is essential to
its development, the local government unit of Ipil has been
consistently supporting the tri-people dialogue efforts of the
Bishops-Ulama Conference since its inception in 1999.
This year, LGU-Ipil is once more a key
player in Sibugay’s celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace
on November 25 to December 01, 2004.
Ipil Mayor Rey Andre Olegario issued an
executive order for municipal employees to be active
participants in the one-week celebration. Those who joined
the launching activity, for example, were given a day off as
incentive. Sure enough, a good number showed up for the Torch
Walk for Peace on day one.
The Sangguniang Bayan also authorized the
release of P10,000 in support of the activities scheduled by
the MWOP chief advocates: the LOGCCO for Peace, Ipil Chapter;
Educator-Student Peace Advocates (ESPA); and the Social Action
Ministry of the Prelature of Ipil.
Ipil should know of what MWOP seeks to
accomplish. A victim of terroristic elements in the past many
times over, Ipil has been hampered by negative publicity,
discouraging outside investors and slowing down economic
growth. Today, however, Ipil has overcome its tragic history
and its people – Christians, Muslims, and indigenous tribes –
have learned to work together for peace, and eventually
progress.
