This story changes a little bit what happened during the Onslaught Saga. You are supposed to play five years after that.

In this alternate reality things developed a little different. Onslaught didn't reveal himself as he did in Onslaught:X-Men. Here he gathered all of his X-Teams and then revealed his plans. the shocker comes that some of his X-Men decided to join him and that he and Xavier were one, they've never separated.

With these guys help Onslaught quickly gained control of the world. The World's superheroes opposed him at first, but their efforts were futile. The wisest heroes joined Onslaught, the others are all locked in an Institute, where their minds have been erased by Onslaught. Onslught has created an Utopia like world, where there is no hunger, no crime, no hate, but at a terrible price. Freedom of mind. No one can think badly about Xavier or his army of mutants, everyone must love everyone or the telepaths will erase their minds. There is a SMALL group of mutants and superheroes that want to stop Onslaught at all costs. They are the Resistance:

Five years have passed by. Onslaught has divided the world. He gave different parts of Earth to his governors.
Magneto rules Europe with his family, finally they are together.
Namor rules all of the oceans.
Black Panther rules Africa.
Colosssus rules Australia with his wife Shadowcat.
Iron Man rules Asia, with his wife the Black Widow
Onslaught rules America (North and South).
Onslaught/Xavier has his government separated in Departments:
Department of Defense: Cable leads a team of seasoned warriors to protect and defend the people of Earth, among its warriors: Cable, Bishop, Shard, Nightcralwer...
Department of Science: Mr Fantastic leads the scientific team, their current mission is to provide Onslaught the means of space travel, to eventually conquer the Universe. Among its members.... Beast, Giant Man, Tony Stark (in Asia), Bruce Banner...
Department of Telepathy: Emma Frost watches over the telapaths that control the population
Department of Training: For young mutants, lead by Banshee.
Department of Mystic Arts: The Scarlet Witch has mastered the mystic arts and she's now the Earth's Sorceress Supreme.

Many more teams will be revealed in the future. Please have in mind that the Bad Guys don't consider themselves bad guys, since they are the ones ruling the World, they are trying to protect their lifestyle. The Resistance is trying to give the people back their freedom, since they can't do whatever they want, but more than once they will ask themselves if they are doing the right thing.
