Season 8

Thrill

Adam: "Clarence Darrow got Leopold and Loeb. Who do we got?"
Jack: "Beavis and Butthead."

Adam: "Until I can decide what constituency to alienate the least, it's your call."
Jack: "Thanks. And I have to decide which clause of the first amendment I like more: Separation of church and state or freedom of religion."
Adam: "So for you it's a Constitutional question."
Jack: "Not entirely."

"Thank you, Mr. Kershaw, you just made up my mind for me."

Adam: "Well, you're the last person I expected to have a problem with this."
Jack: "No one's more surprised than me."

"In other words we can start bugging churches?"

"Are you asking me as a Catholic, or as an officer of the court?"

Rey: "You're a Catholic."
Jack: "Not when I'm at work!"

"I'm playing legal tiddlywinks with these punks. What I'd like to do is take them out to Battery Park and hang them by the scrotum."

"Once they're tried separately, their little finger pointing routine won't work."

Jamie: "Killers are protected by the church, two people can fire the same bullet and now the victim's mom forgives the killer. You go figure it out."
Jack: "Could you -- forgive the killer, I mean?"
Jamie: "No."
Jack: "Neither could I. What does that say about us?"

Denial

"She can't have much in the way of human feelings either. They kill their baby, and then grieve by taking a spin on the dance floor?"

"This case gives me the creeps."

"You're not suggesting we offer the lovebirds a plea?"

"They went to Ms. Talbert's room looking for evidence of one crime. They found evidence of another. That's called luck!"
"So, which devil do we make our deal with?"

"Just so we understand you. You felt so upset that you went back to a party at your fraternity house?"

Jamie: "The jury liked his Romeo of the Dairyland routine."
Jack: "I thought he got creamed."
Jamie: "Then we're tied going into closings."
Jack: "You're a tough handicapper."

Navy Blues

"Absolutely not! If she makes it, she lives with it."

"She really killed him. She really lied."

"Sure, its a classic she said, he said, except she made sure he wasn't around to do the he said."

"Did you rip him a new one?"

"I got over Pete Rose."

Harvest

"Cosgrove declares her dead, then kills her with a blow dart."

Adam: "You're going to hold the jury's hand to make the leap?"
Jack: "I'll hold both their hands."

"It doesn't take an expert to know when someone is breathing, Your Honor."

"Jamie, can dead people feel pain?"

Jamie: "Put yourself in the jury's shoes. Camacho blew a woman's brains out. That's an easy concept to grasp. The rest of it-brain death, apnea tests-I get a headache just thinking about it."
Jack: "Aspirin's in the top right drawer."

"Cosgrove was an aberration. I'm not worried about a shortage of organs."

Nullification

"So, after all that, we can charge them with simple gun possession. They post bail, we look like fascists or idiots. Take your pick."

"We don't have the murder weapon. To hell with it, conspiracy to commit murder and robbery, charge them all!"

"And Son of Sam got his marching orders from a dog. It's nonsense."

(to Jamie): "You start wearing fatigues under your clothes?"

"Your Honor, how long are we going to humor this man? At best they're terrorists. Mr. Christie's so called army amounts to 20 odd hoodlums."

"We're not going to do this. We're not going to become the people Christie thinks we are."

"You didn't win anything. The system you wanted to destroy won!"

"It could be a hollow one. If those clowns could find even one person to acquit them, what does that tell you about this country?"

"Without the law, there can be no justice. And without justice, there can be no freedom."

Baby, It's You (HLOTS Crossover, Part One)

"By the time this case gets to a jury, the evidence will be clues in the Sunday crossword puzzle."

Baby, It's You (HOMICIDE Crossover, Part Two)

"After the hoops Drake has put us through. I want his head over my mantle, right next to his clients'."

(upon finding Jamie sleeping in conference room): "Brushing up on your law school library power nap?"

"I suggest we bring them in together, separate cars, separate rooms. This should not be pleasant or comfortable for either of them. Now it's just us and them."

Blood

"Anyone who gets in the way of my murder cases gets run over!"

"She became a racist to protect her son from racists."

Shadow

"We thought we had a crooked DA, now we have a murderer."

"We don't mind losing the old fashioned way."

"Charlie Harmon hung himself on the hinges of Manny Erlich's lockbox."

"You picked the rules, I'm just upping the ante."

Burned

Adam: "I want you to treat him with respect."
Jack: "He'll get the same from me as everyone else. I don't care who he is."

Ritual

Jamie: "Turns out this guy is a OB/GYN."
Jack: "That's a few organs south of cardiology."

"This case is a piece of crap, Adam."

"Let's see if we can pull a rabbit out of a hat."

Under The Influence

Jack: "He's planning a run for Adam's job next spring."
Jamie: "And drunk driving is the cause he's embracing?"
Jack: "Well, it's not world peace..."

Dressler: "How do you know she wasn't driving?"
Jack: "We believe her. We don't believe you."

"Intent follows the bullet. It shouldn't matter if it was fired by a drunk or by Carrie Nation."

Jamie: "Her statement is exculpatory!"
Jack: "Only if Judge Feldman says it is!"

Adam: "Man one's a good offer."
Jack: "Want me to call his lawyer back?"
Adam: "Your case."
Jack: "Your idea."

"The law. Probably written on a cocktail napkin."

Jamie: "It's not even a fair fight. If Dressler had the flight attendant--"
Jack: "She didn't force feed him that scotch. Or steer him into those people. He did that. He punched the accelerator."
Jamie: "Or he made a mistake."
Jack: "No. Anyways, that's for the jury to decide."
Jamie: "How can they? They don't have the whole story! You're making them accomplices!"
Jack: "So I'm wrong because I want an appropriate sentence?"
Jamie: "Instead of 12 months at Mount MacGregor?"
Jack: "You don't know what you're talking about."

Jamie: "What was that about? What's Title L?"
Jack: "It's what they now call sections 195 and 195.05 of the penal law."
Jamie: "Official misconduct and obstruction? He just threatened you!"
Jack: "That's right!"

Billings: "I don't know what happened in there. You dismantled your case."
Jack: "I removed the needle from his arm is what happened."

Expert

"Still a mystery why she decided to wreak her vengeance on Maher. In my book, her father's lawyer would be a better candidate."

Adam: "She heard what she wanted to hear."
Jamie: "We all do."
Jack: "But we all don't pay $40,000 to hear it."

Castoff

Judge: "What, exactly, was the basis for this belief, Mr. McCoy?"
Jack: "He showed up at the apartment of an acquaintance--Mr. Thatcher--in an effort to extort money."
Greenwald: "To borrow money from an old friend."
Jack: "An old friend who felt it necessary to arm himself with a golf club!"

Pressman: "He's really something, isn't he?"
Jack: "So was Ted Bundy."

Pressman: "I guess we're going to trial."
Jack: "A real trial, Mr. Pressman, not moot court."

Jamie: "The right judge might allow my testimony of what he said."
Jack: "The right brain dead judge."

(to Pressman): "Don't you get the law journal up at Harvard?"

Jamie: "There's something we're not seeing."
Jack: "We're not supposed to--not until it comes up and bites us in the ass."

"He can say moonbeams or Twinkies made his client do it!"

Jamie (handing Jack the Crimson Law Review): "Bedtime reading."
Jack: "Bathroom."

Grief

Jamie: "Harding's financials."
Jack: "You gonna challenge his right to a court appointed lawyer?"

Jamie: "The week after Wendy Singer was raped, Harding pet a down payment on a Harley Davidson soft tail."
Jack: "Nice bike."

Faccia a Faccia

"Couple of days I might not feel so generous."

"Those 'burglars' can come and stuff a pillow over his face and finish the job for all I care."

DiMaio: "Hey, I'm the guy who clipped Nicky Shakes."
Jack: "You have our deepest appreciation."

"The fact that he controls a criminal organization speaks for itself!"

"If we screw up, they'll eat us for breakfast."

"Mr. Napoli`s condition is like a Chinese menu. They've taken symptoms from columns A, B, and C to manufacture a claim of incompetence."

"Maybe you didn't hear me the first time. If you don't fill in the blanks, you're out on the street. By the end of the day. you'll be back where we found you: in a pool of your own blood."

Dobbs: "What does Adam Schiff expect to get out of this--besides photo ops for his reelection campaign, of course."
McCoy: "Nah, we're going for a conviction."

"The fact that the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing is immaterial."

"He was convicted of Murder One. First he serves life then we can talk."

Divorce

"I wouldn't go near a Judge with that crap."

"Please, this is not some dumb gang-banger with a legal aid lawyer."

"Ex-wives always think their husbands lie about money, And they're probably right."

Jamie: "And I used to think my divorce was rough."
Jack: "Look where you could have ended up."

Jack: "She's using us to grind Redfield's face into the ground."
Jamie: "If he committed fraud, it wouldn't be a waste of our time."
Jack: "I don't like being manipulated!"

"We're supposed to give her three years and help her gouge her husband for alimony?"

(looking at motorcycle magazine): "I'm thinking of buying it. It's an antique."

"We were conned!"

"Better she didn't confess. Saves us all from looking like idiots when it gets tossed."

"Look like she never met an ethical violation she didn't like."

"She talked an innocent woman into 3 years in jail. Maybe she will talk herself into 25 to life."

"Better start making criminal law your 'bag', Miss Atkins."

Carrier

"His murder spree took all his time?"

"There's a cure for headaches."

Adam: "We're not going to start a crusade."
Jack: "And I'm not on a crusade."

"His weapon of choice may be unusual, but he's no less dangerous than a common thief who fires a gun."

"Your Honor, if this kid gets out, it's like releasing Theodore Kazinski and giving him a bomb and a stamp."

"The only decent thing he ever did's going to sink him."

Stalker

"We're inducting Lowry for attempted murder. I'm not sending Briscoe to the lions without back-up."

"The Police don't believe you. Neither do I."

"Lowry found evidence and used it to blackmail Wilson. Poetic justice."

(after establishing that the police knew that Lowry and `Giovanni' were the same person)
McCoy: "You concluded that no crime had been committed, and that she faced no serious threat from Mr. Lowry."
Curtis: "Yes."
McCoy: "Well, you told her employer that she was in danger from `Giovanni'."
Curtis: "Yes."
McCoy: "Did you lie?"
Curtis: "Look, I felt sorry for her, I didn't think that she should get fired from her job."
McCoy: "Is that a yes? You lied?"
Curtis: "_Yes."
McCoy: "Are you lying now?"
Curtis: "No."
McCoy: "I'm finished with this witness."

Disappeared

"I'll do my best not to disappoint him."

Melnick: "You turning soft on me, Jack?"
McCoy: "You know I'm a sucker for an execution. I'm just here for the tortellini."

"Human nature being what it is, that's an invitation to do the opposite."

Burden

"Poison hemlock in his car. I'd love to hear his explanation for that."

"The hospitals let him skate by, but the buck stops here!"

Jack: "Michael Sutter isn't the first severely handicapped patient you've had in your care, is he?"
Doctor: "No, I've had many."
Jack: "Did you kill them all?"

"Objection. Contrary to what the defendant thinks, he cannot possibly know what goes on in every hospital across the country."

Bad Girl

"Murder One, 2 counts of assault, drug possession, larceny. Some week!"

"He took a flyer putting her on the stand. He lost. Tough luck!"

"If we're turning the death penalty into a test of religious convictions, you better dust off the rack. We're back to the Inquisition."

Damaged

Defense attorney: "You have to prove the girl's incompetent."
Jack: "Are you kidding, an I.Q. of 65?"

"Since when is an admission hearsay?"

Judge:" The statement is out."
Jack: "Let's just throw out the rules of evidence along with it!"

"Is it because you knew you had crossed the fine line between stud and rapist?"

"This moron is still sitting on the bench."

"All right charge them all, and lean on the weak link."

"I'm going ahead with this counselor. Minimum mercy, maximum sentence. First one who folds gets a walk."

Judge: "Mr. McCoy, it's over, there is no case."
Jack: "How would you know? You made up your mind before you heard the first word of testimony!"

Tabloid

"A plea offer Adam? For a cold blooded murder?"

(after Jamie is served with custody papers): "I'll get started, go kick Neil Gorton's ass."

"That was a gift."

"It's your funeral."

"When you have no case, attack the victim."

Monster

Jack (reading newspaper): "Adam Schiff has clearly lost control of this loose cannon."
Jamie: "Sounds like routine mudslinging."
Jack: "I'm the loose cannon."

"Tough to hit a home run after we accuse the wrong guy."

"You can spin it all you want, it can still be construed as prosecutorial misconduct."

Jack: "You brought a complaint against me. How can I expect a fair shake in your courtroom?"
Feldman: "Still questioning my impartially? "
Jack: "No, your ethics! "

"I'm not stupid enough to play in a rigged game."

"If you force this case to trial and we lose, it will be your ass, Judge!"

Adam: "See this? Feldman predicted to win primary."
Jack: "By who, his mother?"

"Well, I shredded all the documents, erased the tapes, paid off the witnesses. I'm covered Adam."
