"Without the tapes, it's the Bulls without Jordan."
"It's forum shopping."
"That'd make a nice pair of antlers to hang on your wall."
"In my office, we don't pass the ball off to someone else, we run with it!"
"I thought Marks was going to ask your favorite sexual position next."
(to Ross): "I'll have to unlearn some of my sensitivity training."
(to Jamie as they approach the judge who's been sexually harassing her): "Pretend he's your brother."
Gillum: "She's under no obligation to incriminate herself."
Jack: "By telling us her name?"
"It's outrageous. Jamie won't play footsie with him and new facts disrupt his perfect trial, so he takes it out on us."
Adam: "So you're sure this is JOANNE Sullivan you've got at Riker's now?"
Jack: "Who else could it be?"
(after Marks has cross-examined Jack's witness for him):
Marks: "Anything else, Mr. McCoy?"
Jack: "Not anymore."
Jack: "And before you searched Mr. Dunbar's apartment, had you been looking for it (the gun)?"
Rey: "We were keeping our eyes open, yes."
Jack: "How `bout after?"
"If he can relitigate the standing issue, I can relitigate the 'plain sight' issue."
"With all due respect your Honor, when you change the rules of the game in the middle of a trial, there ought to be at least the APPEARANCE of impartiality."
Jack: "Adam, how nice to see you." (Pointing to other prisoners) "Mr. Varnett. Mr. Jasperson. Mr. Brown. Mr. Jones."
Adam: "You all seem in an upbeat mood."
Jack: "All of us except Mr. Jasperson, who was just convicted of murder."
(while in the holding cell):
Adam: "I understand you were in contempt."
Jack: "Just a little."
Adam: "Not until I go see Judge Marks about bail."
Jack: "I'm fine. But if you go, wear silk."
Gillum: "Man one, Jack."
Jack: "Sure...if you can give me a reason why I should accept a plea."
Anita: "I made a judgment call."
Jack: "This is my case, Lieutenant. I decide what's relevant."
To Jamie on conflicting defenses: "Do you expect a jury to give a damn?"
(opening a paper): "It's from the Monroe's attorney. They've filed a writ of mandamus to force us to indict. I call that a shove."
"The judge was mugging for the cameras, Adam. Her decision's completely political."
"Archer's making history. He's the first lawyer to claim a white defendant is being persecuted by the black power structure."
"All we have to do is take an ad in the Times. `Unknown woman seeking Roman Cleopatras. Please contact Manhattan D.A.'"
Melnick: "She was confronted by Miss Ross and two armed detectives."
Jack: "Who was she supposed to bring? Camp fire girls?"
"Miss Sandler, did you think Detectives Briscoe and Curtis were members of the Gestapo?"
Adam: "You can't leave a man like that twisting in the wind."
Jack: "Because he owns half of Chelsea?"
"I don't care if she's Ma Barker, she can back up her story."
"A couple of years of minimum security lawn mowing."
(to Jamie): "You call it making an example. I call it putting a corrupt cop in jail."
Jack: "We practically had to strap him in the chair to get him to listen to the tape."
Jamie: "Jack ought to get hazardous duty pay for all the abuse he suffered."
Jack: "Are you kidding? I loved it!"
"His client is not a minor. Asking for mom & dad is not the same as invoking the right to counsel."
(refers to the judge in a competency hearing): "That arrogant bastard!"
"I'm on a first name basis with the Dallas County D.A. Miss Perry. You might get away from Varrick, but not from me."
"Save it for your press release."
"Lawsuits are fine for Alan Sawyer and Greg Franklin's family. The people are entitled to their own remedy."
Jamie: "People's 27: Alan's evaluations."
Jack: "Take it to projects and have it blown up 200%."
Jamie: "200%? Why not 500%? You don't want the jury to squint."
Jack: "200. Get used to working on a budget."
"We uncovered some new evidence that we couldn't wait to tell you about."
"You didn't want anyone to know you're a hack."
"You sentenced this boy to death just to cover up for your incompetence."
"When the time comes, I'm adding another count to the indictment: Murder 2, depraved indifference."
Jamie: "Everyone cuts corners, Jack."
Jack: "Maybe where you come from. I'll remember to read your briefs more carefully in the future."
"I LOVE these happy endings."
Jamie: "I think Caroline will take man two."
Jack: "You THINK? Or did you two work it out at a meeting in the ladies room?"
"You don't have a deal until I say you have a deal!"
"I'd rather be insulted by Caroline Bennett than mistakenly free a murderer."
"Come on, Adam, what's so scary about a laundry route?"
"Where's your middleman now -- at the bottom of the Hudson River?"
Kirby: "I told him I knew Jimmy and Pete."
Jack: "From the PTA?"
Kirby: "Death penalty?!?!?!"
Jack: "You want to see the statute? It's got your picture."
"Call me a sentimental fool."
"Mr. Bergreen, sometimes we do things without considering all the ramifications. Have you thought about the effects of your testimony--and I don't just mean Laura getting off."
Jamie: "What about Seymour's perjury charge?"
Jack: "It's a felony. We drop the charge, we look like even bigger jackasses."
"We screwed up. We're not supposed to screw up."
Roney: "I'm hungry. Anyone want anything?"
Jack: "We'll pass." (You have to see his facial expressions to get this one.)
"At best, you failed to stop an investigation. At worst, you protected a murderer."
"Nice story. You can sell it to your cellmates for the next 25 years."
"I don't see how protecting a murderer helps your cause."
(to Jamie in a bar, before sitting next to her): "Leave an empty seat next to you any riffraff can sit down."
Lawyer: "He gave you Randall. Let him give you Dorning."
Jack: "That's be fine if we had Randall in custody."
McDugan: "But you just said--!"
Jack: "I just said I'm surprised you didn't see him at breakfast."
"I remember how I felt when I realized my father was a son of a bitch. I can't imagine what it must be like to realize that you raised one."
Arthur Gold: "Mr. McCoy is attempting to elicit that the defendant was a stripper."
Jack: "If Mr. Gold prefers I'll say exotic dancer.'"
"We've got you mailed on the embezzlement sir. On the murder, it'll be a pleasure to try."
"Even prostitutes deserve a patron saint."
"They convicted her. I don't care why."
"We'll have breakfast waiting for him. Find out what lawyers to the stars eat in the morning."
Klein: "If Evan's guilty of anything, it's bad judgment."
Jack: "Because he killed somebody. That's the understatement of the year."
"I know you're new at this but if you're gonna come up with a story you want to be able to offer some corroboration."
"This judge is an idiot. He took the full faith and credit clause of the Constitution and tossed it in the Santa Monica Bay."
"Speak up, Your Honor. There are some people in the Bronx who didn't hear you."
"Someone ought to yank his leash."
"That's our problem--no friends. We ought to start cruising the bars."
LA Attorney: "Berger bitches to my boss, I spend the next two years in misdemeanor court."
Jack: "My boss bitches to your boss, you won't be much better off."
(after Adam throws a newspaper on his desk): "Maybe we should have released him on a Saturday."
Jamie: "Next time try the cartoon channel."
Jack: "That WAS the cartoon channel."
Jamie: "What was that about?"
Jack: "Just a little upset his wife's about to find out he had an affair on the evening news."
"Is that a joke?"
"These would be the drugs there's no proof he took."
"What's next? Time outs for commercials? Walking into court with soft drink logos on our backs?"
"This is a trial, not a soap opera. I wish you people could remember that."
"For a two legged pacifier, Duval kept pretty good notes."
"I'm not ready to concede victory to Eddie Newman's wallet."
"Your grief might be a little more convincing sir if you hadn't just admitted you'd cut off your wife's head!"
Darnell: "[My being in prison] isn't right!"
Jack: "You roaming the streets isn't right, Mr. Darnell."
Darnell: "I don't wanna talk any more."
Jack: "It's not up for a vote."
(Darnell, who is not under arrest, is being questioned by Jack, Lennie, and Rey)
Darnell: "I'm leaving."
Rey: "Sit down."
Jack: "Not now, Detective."
(Darnell barely walks out the door)
Jack: (Turns to Lennie) "Now arrest him."
Ms. Darnell: "Witnesses lie!"
Jack: "Yes, Ms. Darnell, and they can be deceived."
"I'm on the side of the angels here!"
Darnell: "You better step off."
Jack: "There are only three ways that is going to happen, Mr. Darnell. You can kill me, kill yourself, or go back to prison."
"2 A.M. justice. Not always conducive to wisdom."
Bell: "He knew who he was dealing with."
Jack: "A killer turned extortionist."
Lennie: "What the hell was that?"
Jack: "A bird in the hand, detective. Henry Harp goes away for 15 years"
Lennie: "For killing three people?"
Jack: "I only know of two--Officer Schaffer and Mitchell Titus."
Rey: "We just told you we found the body of Earl Novak, Harp's accomplice."
Jack: "Really, I wonder if Harp killed him."
Lennie: "So he walks for killing the cop, but you nail him for killing the cop killer?"
Jack: "An irony he gets to reflect upon over the next 40 years in Attica."
Bell: "Look at the definition of criminal transaction: two crimes closely related in time and place."
Jack: "Hours apart, miles away."
Bell: "Or closely relating in criminal purpose."
Jack: "Robbing a liquor store, killing a friend. Where's the connection?"
Jack: "You've already confessed to being a murderer. Isn't it possible you're a liar as well?"
Harp: "Not about this, why would I?"
Jack: "To avoid being prosecuted for the murder of Earl Novak!"
Lennie: "I wanna go to law school so I can learn how to turn gold into lead."
Jack: "There is a logic to it."
Lennie: "Hey, this whole thing has been screwed up since day one, thanks to you guys."
Jack: "I can nail Harp for the murder if I can prove I didn't know he did it till after I took the plea bargain. We'll have to testify."
Rey: "But we told you."
Jack: "What exactly did you tell me?"
Rey: "Oh, I get it. That's why you wanted us to shut up. You knew it might come to this."
Jack: "I went to law school."
"For all I knew, he fell off a rock into the river."
Bell: "'Whiff of implausibility.' That's being polite."
Jack: "We whiffed, he reeked."
Bell: "So he's not a model citizen. That's enough to make the judge wink. I just didn't expected you to stoop to his level."
Jack: "Gee...Jamie, how many people did I kill last week?"
Harp: "Hey! Earl killed the cop and Earl killed the driver. I did you a favor by taking care of him."
Bell: "We can work out another deal, Jack, save you the cost of a trial."
Jack: "He does hard time in a maximum security prison until hell freezes over. How's that for a deal?"
"At least you got to dodge the question by calling me an idiot."
Jamie: "It's buying his testimony."
Jack: "I just motivated him to tell the truth."
Adam: "You do what you gotta do. You're still welcome to my scotch."
Jack: "Thanks."
Jamie: "What are you going to tell Panati?"
Jack: "There are a hundred good reasons to take this case -- and one better one not to."
Jamie: "You wanna charge up hamburger hill with Adam?"
Jack: "It wouldn't feel right playing for the other team."
Adam: "Mulroy only gives the governor VIRTUALLY unfettered discretion to take over a case."
Jack: "You're gonna hang your hat on virtually?"
Tyrell: "Mulroy V. Carey gives the governor unfettered discretion to supersede a district attorney."
Jack: "His discretion is VIRTUALLY unfettered."
"This should leave the governor with some nice bite marks in the seat of his pants."
