> Historic Pictures of our town:

The pictures of this section have been taken from the very respectable website: "1898 - La Villa De San Germán".

The purpose of this page is to offer English-speaking tourists and visitors a place where they can find information on our history.  If you can read Spanish, I suggest visiting 1898-La Villa de San Germán to find the most accurate information.  (See ad below). Credits for each of these pictures also appear on this website.

For 2003 pictures of the places below shown, please go to "Views of San Germán".

Santo Domingo Square (Plazuela Santo Domingo) in 1878.  Today, a square stands where once stood these trees and unpaved roads.  Notice that the Porta Coeli at this time did not had the belfry.

Picture of the same square but in 1933, where it already had green areas, paved roads, streetlights and benches.

The U.S. Army troops patrolled the San Vicente street on August 10, 1898 shortly after the takeover of the island.  Today (below), the street is called Calle Esperanza, and has changed little over time.  Picture taken on March 2nd 2003.  I tried hard to take a picture resembling the same angle as the old picture but I should have taken a copy of it with me.  1898-La Villa de San Germán has a much similar angle of the street today. "La casa del Componte" or House of Trials, where citizens against Spanish rule in San Germán were judged and sometimes abused by the Spanish militia.  This picture is from around 1970.  The picture below was taken in 2002, a shame for our city.  We hope to see a faithful reconstruction of the house in the near future. In 2003, what was left was retired due to it's imposing danger of collapse.

Open-air museum honoring the 22 towns and cities created out of San Germán's territory.  This and other open-air museums and squares were built by Hon. Jorge A. Ramos Comas (r.i.p. 1997) and honors all of the municipalities created from the San German Party territory.
