Iswarya was born on Earth, and is the eldest daughter of Ghaurav Ramachandran and Rajeswari Ghaurav, two scientist who work for Starfleet as civilians since young she has been fascinated by the stars, and what was "out there". She grew up in a home enriched by Indian culture. Hence it is central to her identity. Her hobbies are dancing (both dancing and non-Indian dancing), reading and Tae Kwon Do, which she a black belt in.
Her best friend from young has been Karan Heeran, a boy. Their parents were friends from their university days, and long-time neighbours. Born six weeks apart, Karan and Iswarya practically grew up together, attending the same schools and classes. Growing up together, and dancing together for so long, made their friendship so deep, they were practically inseparable. So much so that when they were together on earth, they had no secrets from each other. This deep friendship briefly blossomed into a romance once, when they were both fifteen.

After the rape incident, she took Tae Kwon Do in order to be able to defend herself in any situation. She progressed to black belt third dan, due to the sheer force of her determination and anger against Dharma.
Also, this rape incident made her averse to relationships and intimacy. Thus the brief flower of romance with Karan died as quickly as it had begun. Karan, not wanting to hurt her, backed off, and kept his feelings secret.
Instead of going into dance as many thought she would, she made a radical career choice and chose Starfleet. She wanted to prove to the world she was not such another bimbo-like girl, but a woman of substance and strength. This decision upset Karan, her lifelong best friend, as he had thought they would be together in this. After a heated argument, they broke off ties, and Iswarya went to San Francisco to join the Academy.
