One of three PVs released on the deluxe edition of the album FUNKAHOLiC, along with "NOBODY KNOWS" (below) and "Phonoscope" (coming soon). Oh, and for interest's sake... the DVD turned out to be region-free, despite advertisments to the contrary.

Kanji and My Translation

Original Japanese lyrics and music by Suga Shikao.

コノユビトマレ
[KONO YUBI TOMARE]

"バイトに遅刻しちゃいそうだから
ゴメン ちょっとかけ直していい?
あとで ちゃんと聞くよ"
もう最近 八方塞がりで ぼくらどうすればいいのかな?
なんかもう わからないんだ。。。

"Hey, looks like I'm running late for work...
Sorry... can I just call you back in a sec?
After this, I'll really listen, 'kay?"
These days, it's like every door has been shut
So then, I wonder... what should we do?
Somehow, I just don't know anymore...

夕暮れの駅前通りを 思い切りペダルふんで
はずれそうなチェーンがガシャガシャ 音を立ててまわっている

Out in front of the station at night
With all you got, you push that pedal down
But it looks like the chain just failed:
you hear the sound of the crunch as it spins round and round.

どこにも居場所がないって思う人 ぼくのこの指とまれ
ムリヤリもう 探さなくていい
希望見つけるのやんなっちゃった人 ぼくとかくれんぼしようよ
必ず君みつけるよ

Think that there's no place for you out there? Hey, you...
Come over here and play a game with me.
You don't need to make yourself go look for now.
No hope to be found, as hard as you looked? Hey, you...
Let's you and me play "Hide and Seek"
And you can bet I'm gonna find you.

友達の一人はもう今や 情熱を使い果たしたけど
でも まぁ 幸せみたい
友達の一人は今日もまた 愛すべき人のためだけに
歌をうたってる

There's this one friend of mine who, right now
Looks like he's used up his last ounce of fire.
Oh, but... looks pretty happy there to me
That friend of mine, today... gonna do it again.
Just for someone he can't help but love.
He'll go and sing a little song.

知らない人ばかりで 街ができてるとしたら
この世界は とてつもなくでかい孤独のカタマリだ

Well, it's nothing but people you don't know
Making up the city, and that's why
     This whole world is
This one insanely massive smash of loneliness

誰かといても寂しいって言う人 ぼくのこの指とまれ
ムリヤリもう 笑わなくていい
いつかの悲しみが消えない人 ぼくとにらめっこしようよ
笑いかた思いだすまで

Say you're lonely, even with someone? Hey, you...
Come over here and play a game with me
You don't have to force yourself to laugh for now.
Sorrow from someday won't fade away? Hey, you...
Let's you and me play "See Who Laughs First"
At least until you remember how to smile.

帰り駅からの長い坂道 いつもよりスピードだして
ハンドル 手放すな!!

Outside the station near home, there's that long, uphill road
Put on some extra speed today.
Don't let go of the handles, now!!

自分のことあまり好きじゃない人 ぼくのこの指とまれ
ムリヤリもう かわらなくていい
誰かのために何かできる人 明日まで競争しようよ
君の方がずっと早いよ

Not too fond of the person you are? Hey, you...
Come over here and play a game with me
You don't have to force yourself to change for now.
Got something you can do for someone? Hey, you...
Let's have a race until tomorrow, then...
You'll be by far the faster one.

--Translator's Note--

Anyone with ready access to a dictionary can discover that the words "kono yubi tomare" literally translate to "Stop at my finger", which doesn't quite make as sensible an English translation as it could when taken in context. This is a phrase taken from childhood songs and games - something you might say to a firefly you're trying to catch or (as in this case) to another child on the playground when you're asking them to come play with you (Imagine trying to translate "Duck Duck Goose"). The response, when accepting the invitation, is to go over and take the person's finger.      For the purposes of this translation making visual sense, I've chosen to render this statement based on the intent rather than the literal words. Where this occurs in the song, I've translated it as "Come over here, and play a game with me".      In the course of the song, the artist mentions two particular playground games: 1) "Kakurenbo", which basically is "Hide and Seek", and 2) "Niramekko", which is the name given to that game where kids have a staring contest to see who will crack a smile or laugh first. I've only heard the American equivalent called "a staring contest to see who'll laugh", so I've taken the liberty of naming it "Make You Laugh First" for the purposes of translation. Hopefully, that's clear enough without reading this, but I'd rather be sure...      And finally, I messed with the grammar on all the sections where the singer is calling out to someone before telling them to play a game, general or specific, with him. I'll break down the first line where he does this to show what I've done. The Japanese statement is, "doko ni mo ibasho ga nai tte omou hito" - To be overly literal, "Anywhere-there-is-no-place-[for me] Thinking-person". That is to say, "Person who thinks he doesn't have a place anywhere," in the sense of calling out to that person to get their attention. What I have done is first state the identifying feature as a question - I tried it a couple ways, and that seemed to flow the best - and then, having identified, show the singer calling out to him, "Hey, you... Come over here, and play a game with me."      I think that should cover any choices I made that could be construed as less than literal.

Kanji and My Translation

Original Japanese lyrics and music by Suga Shikao.
English translation made for educational purposes without authorization or approval.

さらば     昨日までの口づけよ
さらば     いとおしき胸の痛みよ
まぁ     それはそれとしてだ     何とか今日も生きています

fare ye well,     oh you kisses of my yesterdays
fare thee well,     oh beloved pain within my chest
well     that being what it is, now...     somehow, again today I'll go on living

孤独とか過去とか噂とか
欲望とか身内とかクセとか
明日からおれらきっと     もう笑われずにすみそうだぜ

solitude and days past and the talk upon the streets
desires and the body and the habits we can't beat
I'm sure we'll do it, starting tomorrow...
we won't be smiling, but that all seems arranged now

"信じていればいつか     気持ちはちゃんと伝わってくよ。。。"と
ふざけないでよ     だって     そうじゃない?

"If you keep on believing, someday,
what you feel is sure to reach them..." you said
don't screw around, now!     but, then     isn't that right?

もう     どこへも逃げたりしたくない
誰か "yes!" といって
だって     昨日の場所には戻れない
君といた場所には
手を伸ばしても     誰もいない

oh,     I don't want to run to anywhere anymore
     just say, "yes!" somebody...
but     there's no going back to where I was yesterday
to where I was with you
I might reach out my hand,     but there's nobody there

さらば     昨日までの口づけよ
さらば     いとおしき胸の痛みよ
まぁ     それはそれとしてだ     何とか今日も生きています

fare ye well,     oh you kisses of my yesterdays
fare thee well,     oh beloved pain within my chest
well,     that being what it is, now...
somehow, again today I'll keep on living

ぼくはこれくらい     君をおもってる
君はどれくらい     ぼくをおもってた?
おんなじ量の愛を     欲しがってばっかじゃOutですか?

here you see just how much     I still think of you
I wonder just how much it was     you used to think of me?
     the same balance of love...
that's what I'd want, but is "nearly" out now, too?

"誰かのぬくもりは     触れなきゃ気づかないものさ。。。"と
さわらないでよ     関係ないじゃない

     "The warmth of someone's body
you'll never notice that without a touch..." you said
just take your hands off!     it's not like you weren't there.

もう     誰にも言い訳したくない
だから "yes!" といって
だって     誰でもいーわけない     そうじゃない?
君じゃなきゃ意味がない

oh,     I don't want to explain to anyone anymore
so just say, "yes!" for me, now
oh, but     not just anyone will do,     isn't that right?
unless it's you, won't mean a thing to me

もう     どこへも逃げたりしたくない
誰か "yes!" といって
だって     昨日の場所には戻れない
君といた場所には
こたえなんか     誰も知らない

oh,     I don't want to run to anywhere anymore
     just say, "yes!" somebody
but     there's no going back to where I was yesterday
to where I was with you
the answer is one of     those things nobody knows

Kanji and My Translation:

[Original Japanese lyrics and music by Suga Shikao. English translation made for educational purposes without authorization or approval by Skinner in association with Impetuosity Productions]

フォノスコープ
[Phonoscope]

昨日の夜9時     ぼくは思いついた
"ちょっと待って     愛ってもっと大切じゃない?"
バカにしないで!     ただ伝えたいだけ
それ四捨五入したらムダって事?

9 o'clock last evening     suddenly it hit me
"wait a minute,     isn't love a thing a bit more precious?"
don't make fun of me, now!     I just want to say this...
If you're gonna round it up and down, then really what's the point?

探したらきっと     言葉は消えてしまうよ
耳をすませば     絶望とウソも聞こえてきちゃうしね。。。

If you go out searching     the words you seek are sure to vanish
Open up your ears,     and it's despair and lies you'll start to hear mixed in...

ぼくだけに聞こえる声で     君の言葉がほしい
耳うちでそっと     教えてほしいんだ
例えば     どうしようもないくらい     出口のない夜
誰かの言葉で     もう迷ったり     失ったりしたくない

With a voice just I hear clearly     I want a word from you
Within my ear, here, softly     I want you to let me know
Even just,     "It can't be helped now"     in this night with no way out
to have someone else's words     make me hesitate and part with you...     that, I'd never want

君だけそっぽ向いて     こんな思い
また前みたいに     一人にしないで
"1-2-3-4-5"     数えたらすぐに行こう!
じゃ、がんばって!!     けど理想ってどんなんだっけ?

you alone are turning your back     to what I'm thinking
Don't make this like before...     don't go and leave me lonely
"1-2-3-4-5"     Let's start it when the count is done!
All right, let's go for it!!     But what's the goal again?

途切れたらきっと     二度とはつながらないよ
何もかもがうまくなんて     いくとは思っちゃいないけど。。。

Surely, if we're parted     nothing can put us back together
What exactly is it we're doing right?     Still, I would have never thought of leaving...

心でシャッターを切って     未来を写したら
互いに描くイメージ     同じようで違う色
だから永遠なんて言葉     抱きしめていたくない
ぼくらがそのことを     ふと感じ合う瞬間があればいい

If you tear the shutters from your heart     and print the future that we see
Like an image we'd draw together     there are different colors that we'd choose
And so, such words as "forever"     aren't what I'd want to hold
When it comes to that, if we two     can have the fleeting moments we feel, it's fine with me

I don't know     そっと     いま目をつぶって
You don't know     何かを見つけるんだ
I don't know     もっと両耳ふさいで
You don't know     その先を知るんだ

I don't know     Now,     close your eyes gently
You don't know     You might just find something
I don't know     Stop your ears even further
You don't know     You might learn what lies beyond this

ぼくだけに聞こえる声で     君の言葉がほしい
耳うちでそっと     教えてほしいんだ
例えば     どうしようもないくらい     出口のない夜
誰かの言葉で     もう迷ったり     失ったりしたくない

With a voice just I hear clearly     I want a word from you
Within my ear, here, softly     I want you to let me know
Even just,     "It can't be helped now"     in this night with no way out
to have someone else's words     make me hesitate     and part with you... that, I'd never want

--Translator's Note--
The Online Medical Dictionary takes the following definition of "phonoscope" from Webster's Dictionary:
"An instrument for observing or exhibiting the motions or properties of sounding bodies; especially, an apparatus invented by Konig for testing the quality of musical strings.
An instrument for producing luminous figures by the vibrations of sounding bodies."

This PV was full screen, which required slightly more traditional typesetting for visibility (but I toned down my usual yellow to match the artist's guitar amp, so at least I could stay in the video's color scheme).

Downloads are typo-free. The mistake didn't really affect watchability, so I'm not replacing the YouTube version at this time.
