"I believe you're capable of more than you ever think you are, and it's only when you're faced with a situation that really tests you that you realize what you can do." - Nancy Kerrigan

Nancy Kerrigan

Nancy

A picture of elegance and grace costumed in designs by Vera Wang on the ice, Nancy Kerrigan's achievements will probably always be overshadowed by her part in the "Nancy Kerrigan - Tonya Harding Saga". With an impressive competition record winning Gold at the 1993 U.S. National Championships, and Bronze and Silver medals at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics, her stunning performances did not receive the air-time that news flashes of a just attacked and injured, crying Kerrigan garnered on television screens across the nation. These newscasts, as well as newspaper and magazine articles, made Kerrigan a household name and drew attention to the sport of figure skating like it had never known before.

Despite an injured right knee and her inability to compete in the 1994 U.S. National Championships, Kerrigan was awarded a spot on the U.S.A. Olympic team. Kerrigan worked relentlessly at rehabilitating her knee and was not only ready in time to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics; she was also a favorite to win the Gold Medal. Millions tuned in to watch the Ladies' Figure Skating Competition in Lillehammer, Norway to see what drama might unfold between Kerrigan and Harding, Harding's husband had been implicated in the attack and her involvement was being questioned, but both skaters ignored one another. Kerrigan was in top form and skated the programs of her life. Unfortunately, in the closest of contests, she won the Silver Medal, losing the Gold to Ukrainian Oksana Baiul.

With the Olympics behind her, Kerrigan turned professional. One year later she married her agent, Jerry Solomon, and gave birth to a son in 1996. She did not stay off the ice for long, returning quickly to perform in television events like Disney's Dreams On Ice and Halloween On Ice, as well as exhibitions. She tries to balance her time between skating and quality time with her son.
