10-16-04: MUSKIEBATS 5, JETS 2-- in round 1 of the JMS preseason tournament, the impromptu team consisting of players affiliated with the Muskies and Ice Bats conspired to defeat the Jets in an encouraging exhibition to open the new season. Participating Bats included Scott Strzynski, Paul Muellner, Mark Lanz, new recruit Troy Rickheim, and Alex McEllistrem Evenson. Honorary / ex Bats participating were Chris White and Thom Nolan. After a hard-fought scoreless first period, the Jets struck first but soon ran out of energy, allowing the more well-conditioned MuskieBats (dubbed the "Seafoam" in reference to the color of the tournament-provided jerseys) to strike five times in just over 25 minutes of hockey. Chris White led all scorers with 2 goals and an assist, while Strzynski poured in a goal on a feed from McEllistrem Evenson, and Rickheim and Muellner each notched assists of their own. The MuskieBats insist that Nolan and McEllistrem Evenson each had assists on goals which were not recorded by the official scorer, who replied with "tough shit" when pressed on the issue. The tournament continues on Friday, October 22 with a semifinal matchup between the Royals and Revolt. The MuskieBats will take on team Akbar Kazan at 9:45 PM on Saturday, October 23 in the Bloomington Ice Gardens. The winners of the two games will face off in the championship on Sunday at 9 PM in Richfield. www.jmshockey.com (click on "tournament")

10-23-04: MUSKIEBATS 5, AKBAR KAZAN 4-- round 2 action of the 2004 JMS Tournament pitted Akbar Kazan against the MuskieBats at the Bloomington Ice Gardens on Saturday night. With a trip to the championship game on the line, both teams came out hard from the opening faceoff, ending the first period scoreless and even in shots on goal. The second period brought more action for the capacity crowd, as A.K. struck first, with the MuskieBats answering less than a minute later with a goal from Ice Bat Mark Lanz. Kazan slammed home a power play goal to take a 2-1 lead, but with Evenson in the box for Roughing, Tony Caspers of the Muskies notched a shorthanded tally to even the score. The goal tradeoff continued as Troy Rickheim responded to A.K.'s 3-2 lead with a nice unassisted goal. The period ended with Kazan taking a 4-3 lead into the third. Things looked pretty rough for the MuskieBats as Kazan clamped down on defense. Desperate for a goal, the MuskieBats pulled goalie Jay Weiner with 1:30 remaining on the clock. With extended pressure in the offensive zone, a blind feed from Evenson at center somehow found its way to the point, where an unnamed MuskieBat known only as #71 put a stick on the puck and threaded the needle to even the score. The MuskieBats had a few chances in the last minute to take the lead before Evenson was called for his second roughing penalty of the game with only seven seconds remaining in regulation. ? A hard-fought but cautiously played 5 minute overtime period failed to decide the contest, so ?the game moved to a three-man shootout. Lanz, Caspers, and Turnquist were selected to shoot for the MuskieBats, as Weiner prepared for his second shootout of the night, serving as goal in the Eagles/Wolfpack vs. Buzz/Maroons matchup directly preceding the A.K./MuskieBats game. After shots by Kazan and the MuskieBats were deflected, Tony Caspers was successful in his attempt. Weiner stoned Akbar Kazan's last hope at advancing and the MuskieBats proved victorious. The championship matchup between the Revolt and the MuskieBats is slated for Sunday at 9 PM, Richfield Arena.

10-24-04: MUSKIEBATS 1, REVOLT 8-- The championship turned into a laugher as the Revolt hammered the MuskieBats 8-1 on Sunday night. Although the MuskieBats made a strong showing in the first period, which ended 1-1, the Revolt got their act together seven minutes into the second period and administered a drubbing of five goals in ten minutes, the sting of which will have to resonate with the second place squad until next year's tournament. At least the Red Sox won. Thanks to Ice Bats Scott Strzynski, Mark Lanz, Rob Shulfer, Paul Muellner, Troy Rickheim, Brad Pedersen, and Alex McEllistrem Evenson for participating in the tournament; additional thanks to affiliates Thom Nolan and Chris White. Photos of the first addition to the Ice Bat / Muskie trophy case will be posted this week.
