We woke up at 6:30 this morning, ready to go out and watch the whales on the Peninsula.

There were only a handful of people at the travel agency when we arrived at 7:15 for our bus, two of whom were the driver and guide.

Unfortunately, we were only twenty minutes out of Trelew when the bus decided to break down and we had to wait for a replacement, meaning that we had to hare round Madryn to keep to schedule.

The group were a mixture of ages and countries, with the guide again being given in Spanish (there was an expensive bilingual option, so we did the whispering simultaneous translation trick again).

Our first activity of the day was the pinnacle - the whale watching!

We put our little flourescent jackets on and got on the boat, setting off quickly and getting our cameras ready for the whales to appear.

And appear they did. Having been warned that there might not be any, we spent an hour with cameras in hand trying to get "that perfect shot" of the creatures appearing close by.

I think I got some good shots, but only time will tell. Emma probably got the better shot as my camera jammed just when a whale raised its ugly head near the boat.

It was really exciting, as we kept a look out to see when one would surface!

After that, we were back on the bus in order to go to Caldeta Valdes where first we saw a small penguin colony, which was a lot smaller than the one the day before, and then for lunch on the hill overlooking the sea.

After finishing off the healthy, but expensive salad, we went down to the beach where we looked at some elephant seals, which were huge and ugly and slept on the beach all day. I know some people like that!

We saw some birds and local wildlife, like maras (like hares), martinetas (like peacocks) and guinacos (like llamas) on the bus trip back to the "mainland", which also included a stop at a little information centre with maps and more info about the animals.

One of the most amusing parts of the trip was the guide (Rodrigo Rhys) trying to "sell" the company trip to Gaiman the day after (along with Punta Tomba etc), and hearing his comedy "Welsh accent". Honestly, if Max Boyce could speak Spanish..."che"

After arriving back in Trelew just after eight, we went straight home where we met Hawys ready to go out and eat.

So we walked along to Sugar, on Plaza Independencia, where we all ended up eating the vegetable raviolis, Emma and I having them with tomato sauce and Granny having them with mushrooms. I thought they were nice, but neither Emma nor Granny could finish them on their own.

Then, on the way home we went and had an ice-cream, Granny having a double helping of dulce de leche, while I went for the dulce de leche with pineapple. Yummy.

Home, internet, and then bed - being absolutely shattered after the last two days of fresh air!
