October Update

Coming up this month...

Thursday October 11, 8:00pm: We will be treated to a preliminary hearing of Dr Mark Lindsay's paper, "The Applicability of History in the Construction of Public Theology: Prolegomena to Further Research" which he was going to be reading at the Calvin College Conference on "Christian Scholarship... For What?", the College's main event to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

Ian, Mark and Murray

As Mark told me initially, "It's a bit daunting, as some of the other speakers include Nicholas Wolterstorff, Ronald Sider, and Markus Bockmuehl." Aye carumba! Unfortunately, he won't be going now due to all the turmoil...

Come along and support Mark, and critique the hell out of his paper before he publishes it. An abstract is available as well as the draft of the paper.

Ian Barns has organised a venue: Mt Pleasant Uniting Church, Cnr Reynolds & Coomoora Roads, MT PLEASANT.

Wednesday October 17, 7:30pm: German theologian, Professor Dietrich Ritschl, will be speaking on "The Role of the University in Today's World" at Murdoch University in the Kim E Beazley Lecture Theatre -- and will be followed by "refreshments".

From the publicity:
"As an ethicist, philosopher and theologian, Professor Dietrich Ritschl is uniquely qualified to discuss the cultural role of the university and the mutual responsibilities of university and society. Professor Ritschl presents his case in a world that struggles to deliver basic human rights, where terrorist actions on global issues wreak devastation, where the gap between rich and poor increases and where the planet is threatened by irresponsible management of resources.

"In recent years, Professor Ritschl has devoted considerable time to studying the structure, role and future of universities in Europe and beyond, focusing particularly on the relationship between universities and society, such as industry, the media, secondary schools and the public in general.

"Free parking is available at the University's Car Park No. 3 which is signposted at the main entrances

"For further information and to reserve your seat, please contact the Office of Community Relations on (08) 9360 2486."

Saturday October 20: At the moment, the Second Networking Day for D-Land WA is Saturday October 20, 10:00am - 4:00pm, at the Outback Center, Bagot Rd, Subiaco again. In Geoff's words: "More input on paradigms; more work on coaching; case studies... more networking."

For other information on D-Land WA, you can visit Geoff Westlake's Web Page.

Thursday October 25: Our usual gathering for discussion. Simon has suggested N. T. Wright's The Challenge of Jesus. (IVP. 2000).

Who gets to do what...
  • The most boring chapter goes to Simon B - "The Challenge of Studying Jesus"
  • Nathan gets Chapter 2 - "The Challenge of the Kingdom"
  • Mark gets Chapter 3 - "The Challenge of the Symbols"
  • Steve gets Chapter 4 - "The Crucified Messiah"
  • Matt gets Chapter 5 & 6 - "Jesus and God" AND "The Challenge of Easter"
  • The most exciting chapters go to Ian (That's 7 & 8) - "Walking to Emmaus in a Postmodern World" AND "The Light of the World"
N. T. Wright
For those of you (rightly) wanting to follow up on Mark Strom. He has his own Web Page for Reframing Paul which includes several chapters! (But even if you read it here, please support Mark and buy the book!)

I will continue to update this space as often as possible. If you have news or events you would like to pass on, let me know!
