Dr Ian Barns invites you join in the third 'Gospel and Culture in the
Professions' Forum to be held on Wednesday November 21, 2001 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Worship Centre, Murdoch University.
The purpose of this forum is to encourage Christians to be more confident and creative in connecting the Christian gospel to their work situations. We try to do this by fostering a network amongst Christians working in various areas of professional employment. The Forum provides an opportunity for people to meet, talk about the work they do, and to share the opportunities
and challenges that arise for faithful Christian discipleship at work.
Underlying this initiative is the vision that a faithful and creative witness to the 'public truth' of the gospel by Christians in secular
employment is a vital aspect of the work of God's kingdom in today's world.
For our November forum, we have invited three Christians working in quite different fields to talk about their work and how it expresses their sense of Christian vocation:
Carolyn Wadley Dowley has a passion for recovering stories of the past in the present. In 1997 Carolyn abandoned her work as an architect to devote her professional energies to full time writing. Her debut work, 'Through Silent Country', won the 2001 NSW Premier's History Award for Community and Regional History. She is currently completing a book on East Perth, due for publication in 2002.
Ian Malcolm has a passion for language, particularly Aboriginal English and how it affects thinking and learning. He is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Edith Cowan University, where he also heads up the Centre for Applied Language and Literacy Research.
Linda Berlach is a passionate carer. She works as an occupational therapist and aromatherapist in residential aged care facilities, with a particular interest in dementia care. Linda has a Masters degree from Fuller Seminary in The US and has served on the pastoral team at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church.
Drinks and nibbles will be available from 6:30pm.
