| From what I have uncovered so far, the Brooks family have been in Lincoln since at least 1857. Going back to my Great-Great Grandfather Thomas Brooks, he was born around 1832 and married a lady called Maria White at St.Mary le Wigford in Lincoln on 9th July 1857. Some 136 years later in 1993, I would get married on exactly the same date. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| One of Thomas and Marias children was John Tom Brooks. He was born at number 16, Spa Buildings in Lincoln on 15th March 1864 and died on 28th May 1923. Around 1893, John Tom married Annie Harding Baines, the Harding part being her mothers maiden name. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| In 1893, a branch of the Co-operative society opened in Reepham village but it soon became apparent that the premises were insufficient for its requirements. By 1900, the society purchased two new suitable properties for 375 and 75 respectively, so as to provide greater accommodation. New stores and a bakery were built and formally opened on April 24th 1901. It is unclear when exactly, but at some point in time John Tom Brooks became the manager of branch number 17 at Reepham. In 1911, a book was written by Duncan McInnes JP called History of Co-operation in Lincoln 1861-1911 and it is from this book that details of John Toms work have been uncovered. The Co-op store in Reepham remained open for 78 years and closed in April 1979. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| In 1894, John Tom and Annie had a daughter called Annie Mary, born at 49 John Street in Lincoln. In July 1928, Annie Mary married Harold Marshall at the Weslyan Chapel, Clasketgate, Lincoln. John Tom is buried at Reepham Methodist church along with his wife Annie. Around his grave there is the inscription A Life well Spent. |
