Hunter Gatherers - Blog

The flags indicate the countries we will be travelling through

Progress to date 2005:

30th January - we take a flier and buy a car on ebay - unseen and before we have been accepted for the challenge - a Suzuki Swift for just 100

11th February - car delivered on a trailer to our home - it is not drivable (cooling system in bits)

March - Bad News - car is diagnosed as a non repirable rust bucket and towed to the scrapyard. I vow never to buy a car unseen on ebay again

17th May - I accept redundancy which gives me more time to plan the adventure - Woopee!

24th May  - Good News - our application to join the rally is accepted. I now start searching for a lefthand drive (LHD) car. Demand on ebay is very strong as 200 other teams also search for a LHD Car

19th June - As the result of a cunning plan to search for a LHD Van rather than a car, we win an auction on ebay to buy an ex Belgian Post Office Van.

22nd June -  I buy it unseen and pay cash to a nice chap who meets us in a car park in High Wycombe 100 +290 for the stereo!)
It has 12 months MOT and gets us home to Bristol

8th July - We attend the launch party in a very damp field near Exeter and meet many of our future team mates - it is good to find out that we are not alone in our loonacy

22nd - 25th July - Bid for a safari roof rack for van and win it for 5.50. But it is in Kings Lynn and too big to post. Luckily after a chance remark to our next door neighbour, it transpired that Steve was going to Kings Lynn that week and agreed to collect it and subsequently donate it to the project - What good luck ("Jammy Shit") and what a good chap!
