My Life: Birth to 10 Years
My mother and father met at the convalescent hospital they were working at. My mother had just lost my sister, Jennifer, and was not really looking for a relationship, but my father would not give up until she agreed to go out on a date with him. During my mother's pregnancy with me, my father joined the Navy and was gone for long periods of time, so she was left alone to do nothing but take care of her body, and, in turn, take care of me. She sang and played records to her belly, which, I think, is why I love music so much today. My father was allowed to be home around my mother's due date, and he tried to get my mom to talk everywhere so she would go into labor before he had to go back out to sea. When my mom's labor began, my dad was so nervous that he locked the car keys in the house and had to break the door down to get them!

After I was born, my parents were married, and then my father had to head back out to see. My dad served on the U.S.S. Prairie. We lived in San Diego for a while and when my father re-enlisted, he was reassigned to Norfolk, Virginia. This is where my mom and dad would share the rest of their marriage. When I was almost 5 years old, my mother learned that her father was very ill, so we made the journey back to California to Riverside, where my grandfather lived with his new wife Margie, and their daughter, Imogene. We would not be going back to Virginia nor to my father, because my parents had been having some marital problems they just could not work out. My Grandfather died soon thereafter. Margie took Imogene to live with her family in Northern California and my Aunt Kathy, her husband, and my four cousins left Riverside to go to Arkansas. My mom and I were alone in my grandfather's house. Things were very hard at that time and my mom worked two jobs while going to school full-time and raising me by herself. My mom dated and met a man named Lee, who had been the closest thing I had had to a father figure in my life for quite some time, but that relationship did not last. We moved around during that time and then, finally, ended up in Bell Gardens with my Grandma Stella, and her little boy, my "uncle" Bobby. My mom got a promising job at the Bicycle Club and was a Chip Attendant there for a while. She made good money and we were finally getting ahead. That was when she met my step-father, Randy. I think I was about 8 or 9 years old by then.

No matter what, mom and I have always maintained a close relationship throughout the years. We were inseparable up until she met my step father, Randy, and I tried to think of it as I had a father. He didn't really want that responsibility, as you will see in the next page, but I tried really hard to be a good girl to keep the peace in the house. It was a really big transition for me. I had been the center of my mom's world and now there was someone else who wanted her attention and really didn't want me around. I just wanted to have a father in my life. I have to say that there was a lot of jealousy on both sides, and my poor mom was in the middle.
