The Travel Girl

Inia Asuncion, our travel girl is on the roll again. She has just returned to Bangkok from her business trip to Nepal when she got scheduled to fly to Atlanta...where she got a chance to meet friends and relatives back in New Jersey. You'll think that will tire her? Nope, last email I got from her, she was in Colombo, Sri Lanka. These travels...all in March only proves that she must really have a mole on her foot.

Travel makes one wiser. To be able to travel while working is a great benefit. To be able to help others while working is even a greater privilege which she gets from CARE International.

The Ponio's Can-American Tour

It will be a busy month for Leah Espino-Ponioand husband Ben and their 3 kids who is currently in their Californian wing of their cross-American/Canadian tour.

'Talked to her from LA...she is staying with Diana. She is also expected to stay with the Cajiuats in Vancouver and with us, the Buzons in Toronto. We will bring you more updates and hopefully lots of pictures on their trip which is expected to bring our North American batchmates together to welcome Leah and family ('Heard the Parados & Bautistas will visit them at Diana's on Friday)

Noe Espino

BIG SURPRISE In Vancouver

Terry turned 40!?!

February 22nd was one of the few Fridays that I decided to take a day-off. Past lunchtime, my phone rang. I hesitated to answer figuring out that no one really knows that I am not at work. It’s probably a telemarketer. But I was surprised to learn it was Beng who was calling me. She was inviting me to Terry’s birthday the following day.

Just what most of us are dreading to face, we will all be turning 40 soon. The church group that Terry Javier belong to planned a surprise birthday party. The whole event was orchestrated by Julius, Terry’s loving husband. Beng decided to add spice to the party by inviting Torresians in Vancouver.

It turned out to be a very successful event. Terry was in tears most of the time to receive surprises after surprises. She was not expecting Torresians to be there. At last, all of us here in Vancouver had an instant mini-reunion. Hindi kasi mabuo-buo tuwing magpaplano noon. In attendance were: Beng Evangelista & family, Celso Galvez and family, Gigi Paiste & daughter, Charmaine, Ruben with Nathan and “moi”.

After dinner, Terry was asked to listen to a taped overseas call where all the members of her family from the Philippines and Calgary greeted her. Being the youngest in a family of 8, dad, mom and all the "kuyas" and "ates" gave their emotional greetings. Video tape was also shown with Terry’s pictures from childhood to “40"hood.

As for us Torresians, it was really a blast to be able to see each other. We have discovered so many things:
• It was only then that I learned that Gigi live just five minutes drive away from our place.
• I also learned that Gigi’s youngest, Charmaine, used to go the the same school as my Florence.
• At last we had a chance to see Celso’s newborn baby girl. Sa tutoo lang, ang gandang bata itong bunso ni Celso. Tinatanong ko nga si Celso kung paano nangyari yun? Siguro nagmana kay Joan.
• We get to taste Celso’s famous “palitaw”.
• Sa wakas, nagkita rin kami ni Beng. I got the chance to meet her little angels for the first time.
• My Nathan was so thrilled again to play with Terry’s two boys, JJ and JT.
• Magaling palang mag-boogie si Celso at Terry.

We can’t stop giggling like high school kids especially when we started reminiscing and copying famous high school teachers. Of course, as you can see in the pictures, Terry and Celso can’t keep still. Kenkoyan ng kenkoyan. For one magical Saturday night, we all became 16 years old again. And all we’ve been waiting for is for Terry to turn 40.

Happy Birthday again, my friend.

Joseph "Jay" Po

Jay & Daughter Johanna

I remember those afternoons we hang around the Ventura complex with Jay Po. His Mom always welcomes us and even prepare meals for us most of the time. I always think of Jay as that courteous little fellow...the last name says it all! He is one of my best buddies. He graduated as Science-1. I was so happy to get a surprise email from him about 2-3 years ago (through the AlumniNet). A long sought photographs finally arrived in the mailbox....

Jay is a divorced and a single dad. Because they have just moved to Anchorage from Pt. Barrow, Alaska he is still looking for a better paying job while enjoying driving a 72 to 85 seats passenger 35 feet long school bus for the school district in Anchorage. He was a teacher's aide for 5.5 years. He worked as a natural gas serviceman then got transferred as purchasing officer which included, warehousing, shipping and receiving for Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative Inc. for 12 years.

Here's what Jay can say about Barrow, Alaska....."Barrow is a very unique and isolated place-very interesting for it is the
northern most city in Alaska or should I say the USA. "Top of the World","Land of the Eskimos" and " The Land of the Midnight Sun" as most people would say."

E.T. of the Month

Noe Gerardo Galang Espino

"March 8, I had to go back to Manila for the last rites of Noe Espino. My
classmates were there: Edmon, Marilou, Leonor, Eleanor and Rey Medenilla.
It was a very moving ceremony. Noe, as it turned out, was already a
budding recording artist using the name Bespren Diego. His MTV was shown
before the mass; his clippings, write-ups on him, photos and posters were
all over the place. My driver actually recognized his song "Maraming
Magmamahal sa Akin." Nilo was crying; Leah's father had a stroke and found
it difficult to speak. Dra. Lumen Espino gave a very nice tribute in
between sobs. His nephews and nieces by Leah and Nilo rendered an acapella
number: Amazing Grace which happened to be Noe's favorite religious song.
People whom Noe helped came: the blind, the mute, deaf and others. Leah
gave us cassetes of his album. Nice songs. Sayang. He's really good.
His album was launched at ASAP, the most popular Sunday noontime show here
in PI. Tha packaging was really great. I think he conceptualized it. The
photos were done by Mae Espino. In the acknowledgement of the album, a
line was written "tnx to natz buzon for giving me my first electric guitar
. . ." or something to that effect. He also wrote something about the
people of Tondo. I suppose that Noe remained a Tondo boy by heart. His
album's title: Mga Kantang Kanto.
After the mass, my classmates still went to Starbucks Coffee for a
tete-a-tete. I had to drive back to Tagaytay to facilitate the start of
the three-day retreat of my senior students." -Paring Erick
