Mission

The mission of the Humane Voters of Homer Glen is to promote the humane treatment of animals through legislation, education and advocacy.

History

The Humane Voters of Homer Glen was created in March 2008 in response to a news story out of Peotone Illinois.

On March 1st 2008, police rescued 49 dogs from an unheated garage in Peotone. These dogs were dehydrated, malnourished, and living in filthy conditions. Many would have died soon if an anonymous tip hadn't led police to investigate (read more here). You may think such a terrible thing could not happen here in Homer Glen, but it could.

If you care about animals, it is hard to imagine that someone could deliberately abuse them. The vast majority of people in our community love animals, but there are always a few who will cause them harm. We need to ensure that there are local ordinances in place to protect animals and to educate the public.

The Humane Voters of Homer Glen is a grassroots ad hoc organization of Homer Glen residents. Our goal is to promote the enactment and enforcement of laws within Homer Glen to protect animals from neglect and abuse. Laws protecting animals also protect people. The link between animal cruelty and further violence against people is well documented. Animal cruelty laws that provide for stiff sentences and fines backed up with enforcement capability are good for everyone.

We believe Homer Glen is a community with a conscience. Homer Glen has a strong record of protecting our natural resources. Let's see what can be done to protect and improve the lives of animals as well.
