Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner, was the leader of these rapid expansions and continues to deny that contraction will do any good. The problem with the expansion is that the new franchises were not placed in areas with hockey tradition or a strong hockey fan base.
Radical rule changes may change the game of hockey and therefore many die-hard hockey fans or traditionalists may leave the sport.
SEASON
- 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie and overtime loss
- reduce the number of games in a season to 70
- each team plays every team twice, once at home, once away, with each team playing their division and conference rivals more.
PLAYOFFS
With our proposed contraction of 6 teams, and remaining 12 teams in each conference, the NHL could move to a new format:
- 4 teams from each conference qualify
- 1 vs 4 seed, 2 vs 3 seed
