1. Always have the computers in your home with internet access in wide open areas conducive to adult supervision (ie. living room). Allowing a child to have internet access in his or her room is never recommended. 2.
Do not allow children to have internet access unless a parent or guardian
is home. This can be accomplished by keeping your internet password private to
adults only. 3. Make it a house rule that your child informs you when they are going into a chat room. Insure consequences are given for non-compliance. 4. Tell your child NEVER to respond to email, chat comments or instant messages that are inappropriate, threaten or harassing in any way. Sending a response just encourages the person to continue. Tell your child to inform you of such messages and print out the message and provide the information to your online Service Provider (ie. AOL, etc.) Any messages containing threats of violence should be reported to the Howell Police Department immediately (732-938-4111). 5. Tell your child to NEVER share personal information about themselves online or in their online profile (last name, address, telephone number, etc.) and to NEVER get together with someone they may “meet” online.
