    Welcome !

Three Howell families occupied the eastern end of Long Island between 1640 and 1850 -  Edward Howell in Southampton,  Richard Howell in Southold,  and the recently identified family of Abraham Howell, also of Southampton.

There has been confusion regarding Richard Howell of Southold and Richard Howell, the son of Edward Howell of Southampton.  Some have tried to connect the Southold Howells with the Southampton Howells. DNA findings show that the two families are NOT related.

This web site has been developed to serve as a source of information for those researching the family of Richard Howell, early resident of Southold, Suffolk County, New York. and John Howell of Middle Island Village, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York.

The only available resource we have for Richard Howell’s origins come from family traditions passed down through the years. Examples of those are found under the heading “Histories.” It is our hope to find actual source information regarding Richard’s parents, his birth, their migration to America, and other details. In particular, we are looking for a family Bible referenced in Wilbur F. Howell's information on Richard.

We also hope to find additional information on Richard’s descendants.

Please enjoy the site. If you have information to share with us, we would love to hear from you. To pass on information, please contact the site coordinator at the email address to the left.

This web site was last updated on December 30, 2015.    We are still working to include improvements and information, so check back for updates.

A new research tool that has been recently used is DNA sampling. Over 130 men with the Howell surname have submitted DNA samples. More information regarding a project specifically for Howells can be found at www.familytreedna.com/public/howell .   Note Howell family groups 2, 3 and 11.    We invite any males with the Howell surname to participate in the project.
